GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN THIS MANUAL
DDNS - Dynamic Domain Name System ~ A method of automatically linking back to your
Dynamic IP address using an Internet address that does not change
DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol ~ A method use by Servers and Routers to
assign dynamic IP addresses to your equipment each time you connect.
Dynamic IP - An IP address that can change and is assigned by a server at your ISP each
time you connect.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol ~ A protocol used to transfer files over the Internet.
IP - Internet Protocol ~ Part of the control method for transferring data across Networks
and the Internet.
NTP - Network Time Protocol ~ The method used by devices connected to the Internet to
update their built in clocks.
POP3 - Post Office Protocol Version 3 ~ The most common method of retrieving mail from
your ISPs server.
PPPoE - Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet ~ The usual method of connecting to ADSL
Broadband, works like a Dial Up connection. May be handled by your PC, a Router or an
ADSL modem.
SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol ~ The method used by most ISPs to transfer
outbound mail via the Internet.
Static IP - An IP address permanently assigned to your Network or Internet connection.
