Getting Started With Switch Configuration

Setting Up Passwords

Setting Up Passwords
You can password-protect CLI access to the Series 8100fl Switch by setting
up passwords for Exec mode access, Privileged Exec mode access, and
terminal line access. If you have a User password but not an Enable password,
you can use only the commands available in Exec mode. If you have an Enable
password, you can use commands available in the Privileged Exec and
Configuration modes, as well as the commands in Exec mode.
In addition, you can set up the Series 8100fl Switch for TACACS+ or RADIUS
authentication by a TACACS+ or RADIUS server. Procedures for configuring
the switch for TACACS+ and RADIUS can be found in the Management and
Configuration Guide.

Specifying the CLI-level Password

To add password protection to the CLI, enter the following command:
Switch 8100fl(config)#enable secret <password>
By default the password you enter will be encrypted to prevent it from being
displayed in clear text in the configuration file output.
For example:
To allow passwords to be displayed in an unencrypted format, enter 0 before
you enter the password.
For example:
3-6
To create an encrypted password called "mysecretpassword" enter;
Switch 8100fl(config)#enable secret mysecretpassword
When you enter the password, and then enter show running-config, this
will appear as a line in the running configuration as follows:
enable secret 5 $1$ZyK.$8NHx2DJBsiGQyhTBmUakz1
where 5 indicates that the password is encrypted as an MD5 hash.
To create a clear text password called "mypassword" enter;
Switch 8100fl(config)#enable secret 0 mypassword
