Chapter 12 - Configuring PPP and Cellular Modem
The Access Point Name is the APN of your wireless network. This information will
be provided by the wireless network when you register for data service.
The Dial string is special command to be sent by the cellular modem to the wireless
network to establish a data connection. For GSM/GPRS network, normally it is the
string: "*99***1#". This command might vary depending on the wireless network.
Please consult the wireless network operator for the correct dial string command for
data service. A regular telephone number is usually not required to connect to a GSM/
GPRS network.

Modem Status

The Modem Status screen displays the status of and information about the cellular
modem installed in the RuggedRouter. Please note that this information may only be
collected from the modem if a PPP link is not currently active on the modem. If the
refresh button is clicked while a PPP link is active, the information displayed is that
obtained before the PPP link was established. In order to obtain accurate and current
modem status information, we need to disconnect any active PPP link on the cellular
modem, e.g., by selecting "none" for the Modem PPP Client Connection/Connection
to establish at boot time.
Type of modem shows you the current model and software version of the cellular
modem installed.
Received Signal Strength indicates the current received signal level between cellular
modem and cell site. The modem is able to show 5 different levels of received signal
strength.
Network Operator displays the identity of wireless network that the cellular modem
is currently connected to.
Enhanced Network Operator displays the name of Mobile Virtual Network (MVN)
that the cellular modem is currently connected to.
Network Registration Status displays the current registration status of the cellular
modem with respect to the GSM/GPRS network. Registered/Home,
Registered/roaming or Unregistered will be displayed depending on the current
connection status.
SIM Card Identification displays the ID of the SIM card currently installed in the
cellular modem.
