Never run anengine
indoors or in a poorlyventilatedarea. Engine
exhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,an odorless,and deadlygas.
Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting, m akecertainthe blade(s)
andall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnect t hesparkplug wire
andgroundagainsttheengineto prevent u nintended starting.
Periodically checkto makesurethe bladescome to complete
stop withinapproximately (5) five secondsafteroperatingthe
bladedisengagement c ontrol.If the bladesdo not stop withinthe
this time frame,your machineshouldbe servicedprofessionally
by a Searsor otherqualifiedservicedealer.
Checkbrakeoperationfrequentlyas it is subjectedto wearduring
normaloperation.Adjustand serviceas required.
Checkthe blade(s)and engine mountingboltsat frequent
intervalsfor propertightness.Also, visuallyinspectblade(s)
for damage(e.g.,excessivewear,bent,cracked).Replacethe
blade(s)with theoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's (O.E.M.)
blade(s)only,listed in this manual.Use of parts whichdo not
meetthe originalequipmentspecifications may lead to improper
performanceand compromise safety!
Mowerbladesare sharp.Wrapthe blade or weargloves,and use
extracautionwhen servicingthem.
Keepall nuts,bolts,and screwstight to be surethe equipmentis
in safeworkingcondition.
Nevertamperwith the safetyinterlocksystemor othersafety
devices.Checktheir properoperationregularly.
After strikinga foreignobject,stop the engine,disconnectthe
spark plugwire(s) and groundagainstthe engine.Thoroughly
inspectthe machinefor anydamage.Repairthe damagebefore
startingandoperating.
Neverattemptto makeadjustmentsor repairsto the machine
whilethe engineis running.
Grasscatchercomponents and the dischargecoverare subject
to wearand damagewhich couldexposemovingparts or allow
objectsto be thrown.Forsafetyprotection,frequentlycheck
components and replaceimmediately with originalequipment
manufacturer's (O.E.M.)parts only,listed in this manual.Use of
parts whichdo not meetthe originalequipmentspecifications may
lead to improperperformanceand compromise safety!
Do notchangethe enginegovernorsettingsor over-speed the
engine.The governorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperatingspeed
of the engine.
Maintainor replacesafety and instructionlabels,as necessary.
Observeproperdisposallawsand regulationsfor gas,oil, etc. to
protectthe environment.
Accordingto the ConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)
and the U.S.Environmental P rotectionAgency(EPA),this product
hasan AverageUsefulLifeof seven(7) years,or 270 hours
of operation.At the end of the AverageUsefulLife, buya new
machineor havethe machineinspected annuallyby a Searsor
otherqualifiedservicedealerto ensurethat all mechanical a nd
safetysystemsare workingproperlyand notwornexcessively.
Failureto do so can resultinaccidents,injuries or death.

ENGINE
Toavoid seriousinjuryor death,do notmodifyengine in anyway.
Tampering with the governorsettingcanlead to a runaway engineand
cause it to operateat unsafespeeds.Nevertamper with factorysetting
of enginegovernor.

Engineswhich are certifiedto complywith Californiaand federal
EPAemissionregulations for SORE(SmallOff RoadEquipment) are
certifiedto operateon regularunleadedgasoline,and may include
the followingemissioncontrol systems:EngineModification (EM)and
ThreeWay Catalyst(TWO)if so equipped.
SPARK
ARRESTOR
If a sparkarrestoris used,it shouldbe maintained in effectiveworking
order by the operator.Inthe Stateof Californiatheaboveis required
by law (Section4442of the CaliforniaPublicResources Code). Other
states mayhavesimilarlaws.Federallaws applyon federallands.
A sparkarrestorfor the mufflerisavailablethroughyournearestSears
Partsand RepairServiceCenter.
