MAINTENANCE
Shutoff the engine beforeperforminganymaintenance. T o prevent
accidentalstart-up,disconnectthe spark plug boot.
iMPORTANT: if enginemustbe tippedto transportequipmentor to
inspect o r removegrass, keepsparkplug sideof engineup.Transport-
ingor tippingengine sparkplug downmaycause smoking,hard
starting,sparkplug fouling,or oil saturationof air cleaner.
Periodicinspection a nd adjustment o f the engine isessentialifhigh
levelperformanceisto be maintained.Regularmaintenance will also
ensurea long servicelife. The requiredserviceintervals and the kind
of maintenance to be performedare describedin the tableon the
previouspage.Followthe hourlyor calendarintervals, whicheveroccur
first. Morefrequentserviceis requiredwhenoperatinginadverse
conditions.
Ifthe engine hasbeen running,the mufflerwill be very hot. Be careful
notto touch the muffler.
Servicing
the Engine
Oil
Checkthe oil levelregularly.
Be surecorrectoil levelismaintained.Checktheoil everyfive to
ten hoursof operation,beforestartingthe engine.See Checking
Oil Levelinthe Assemblysection.
Onlyuse high qualitydetergentoil ratedwith APIserviceclassification
SF,SG,SH, or SJ. Selectthe oil's SAEviscositygradeaccordingto
theexpectedoperatingtemperature. R eferto Gas & Oil inthe As-
semblysectionof this manual.
Oil Drain
8.
Remove the oil drainsleevefromthe oil sump.Returnthe dipstick
to the oil filltubeand screwtheoil fill cap backintoplace.
9.
Refillthe enginewiththe newmotoroil. Referto Gas& Oil inthe
Assemblysectionof this manualforinformation regarding the
approvedoil type.
iMPORTANT: Usedmotoroil may causeskin cancerif repeatedly
left in contactwith the skinfor prolongedperiods.Althoughthis is
unlikelyunlessyou handleusedoil on a dailybasis,it isstill advis-
able to thoroughlywash yourhandswith soapand wateras soonas
possibleafter handlingusedoil.
NOTE: Pleasedisposeof used motoroil in a mannerthat iscompat-
iblewith theenvironment. W e suggestyoutake it in a sealedcontainer
to your localservicestationfor reclamation. D o notthrow itin the
trash,pour it downa drain or on the ground.
iMPORTANT:
Be sureto checkengineon a levelsurfacewith the
enginestopped.Drainthe oil whilethe engineis still warmto assure
rapidand completedraining.
Fordrainingoil from the engine'scrankcaseof selectmodeltractors,a
plasticoil drain sleeveispackedwith this Operator'sManual.Todrain
theoil, proceedas follows:
1.
Unscrewthe oil fill cap and removethe dipstickfromthe oil fill
tube.
2.
Snapthe smallendof oildrainsleeve ontothe oilsump.SeeFig.20.
3.
Removedrain plug and drain oil intoa suitablecontainerwith a
capacityof no lessthan 64 oz.
4.
Tipthe tractorslightlyinthe directionof the suitablecontainerto
aid in fully drainingall of the oil from the engine.
Beforetippingengineor equipment t o drainoil, drain fuelfrom tank
runningengine untilfuel tank isempty.
5.
Servicethe oil filter as instructed l ater inthis section.
6.
Servicethe Oil Filterifdesired,as per the instructions laterin this
section.
7.
Reinstallthe drainplug and tightenit securely,12-14Nm(106.2-
123.9in-lb).

The Oil Filter
Thisengine isequipped witha spin-on oilfilterthatshould be replaced each
timeanoil change isperformed, everyseason or 50hours.Refer toFig.21.
