System Configuration
When attaudio,video and systemconnections
havebeenmade,therearea few configuration
adjustments that mustbe made.A few minutes
spentto correctlyconfigureandcalibratethe
unit wiii greatlyaddto your listeningexperience.
Speaker Selection and Placement
Theplacementof speakersin a muItichannet
home-theatersystemcan havea noticeable
impact on the quality of soundreproduced.
No matter which type or brand of speakersis
used,the samemodelor brandof speaker
should be usedfor the left front, centerand
right front speakers. T his createsa seamless
front soundstageand eliminatesthe possibility
of distracting sonicdisturbancesthat occur
when a sound movesacrossmismatched
front-channel speakers.
Speaker Placement
Depending on the type of center-channel
speakerin useand your viewingdevice,place
the centerspeakereither directlyaboveor
below yourTV,or in the centerbehind a perfo-
rated front projectionscreen.
Oncethe center-channel s peakeris installed,
position the left front and right front speakers
so that they areas far awayfrom one another
as the center-channel s peakeris from the pre-
felred listeningposition.Ideaily, t he front-channel
speakers shouldbe placedsothat their tweeters
are no morethan 24" aboveor below the
tweeter in the center-channel speaker.
Dependingon the specificsof your room
acousticsand the type of speakersin use,you
may find that imaging is improvedby moving
the left front andright front speakersslightly
folward of the center-channel s peakekIf possi-
ble, adjust all front loudspeakers sothat they
are aimed at ear height when you are seated
in the listeningposition.
Usingtheseguidelines, y ou'll find that it takes
someexperimentation t o find the correctloca-
tion for the flont speakers inyour particular
installation.Don'tbe afraidto movethings
arounduntil the systemsoundscorrect. O ptimize
your speakers sothat audiotransitionsacross
the front of the roomsoundsmooth,and that
soundsfrom all speakers appearto arrive at the

Sulroundspeakersshouldbe placedon the side
walls of the room,at or slightly behindthe
listeningposition.Thecenterof the speaker
shouldface into the room.Thespeakers should
be locatedsothat the bottom of the cabinet
is at leasttwo feet higherthan the listeners'
earswhen the listenersareseatedin the
desiredarea.
If side-wall mountingis not practical,the
speakersmay be placedon a rearwall, behind
the listeningposition.Again,they should be
locatedso that the bottom of the cabinet is at
leasttwo feet higherthan the Iisteners' e ars.
Thespeakersshouldbe no morethan six feet
behindthe rearof the seatingarea.
Subwoofersproducenondirectionalsound, so
they may be placedalmost anywherein a
room.Actual placementshouldbe basedon
room sizeand shapeandthe type of subwoofer
used.One method of finding the optimal loca-
tion for a subwooferis to begin by placingit in
the front of the room,about six inchesfrom a
wall, or nearthe front corner of the room.
Another methodis to temporarilyplacethe
subwoofer at your normallisteningposition,
and then walk around the room until you find
a spot where the subwoofersoundsbest. Ptace
the subwoofer in that spot.Youshould also
follow the instructionsof the subwoofer'sman-
ufacture_, o r you may wish to experimentwith
the best locationfor a subwoofer in your lis-
tening room.
Oncethe speakershavebeen placedin the
room and connected,the remainingsteps
inthe setup processareto programthe
AVR11O'sbassmanagementsystemfor the
type of speakersusedin your system, c alibrate
the output levels,and set the delaytimes used
bythe surround-soundprocessor.
