Installation and Connections
System Installation
After unpackingthe unit, and placingit on a solid
surfacecapable of supportingits weight,you will
needto makethe connections t o youraudioand
videoequipment.
Audio Equipment Connections
We recommendthat you usehigh-qualityinter-
connectcableswhen makingconnectionsto
sourceequipmentand recorders to preservethe
integrity of the signals.
When makingconnections to audio source
equipmentor speakersit is alwaysa good prac-
tice to unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet.
Thispreventsany possibilityof accidentally
sendingaudio or transientsignalsto the speak-
ers that maydamagethem.
1. Connectthe analog output of a CDplayerto
the CD inputsQ.
NOTE:When the CDplayerhas both fixed and
variableaudio outputsit is best to use the fixed
output unlessyou find that the inputto the
receiveris so low that the sound is noisy,or so
high that the signal is distorted.
2. Connectthe analog Play/Out j acks of a cas-
sette deck,MD,CD-Ror otheraudio recorderto
the Tape Input jacks I_t. Connectthe analog
Record/In jacks on the recorderto the Tape
Output jacks O on the AVR110.
3. Connectthe output of any digital sources
to the appropriateinput connectionson the
AVR110 rear panel. Note that the Optical
and Coaxial Digital Inputs _i_li'_
may
be usedwith a DolbyDigital or DTSsourceor
the output of a conventional CDor LDplayer's
PCM (S/P-DIF) o utput.
4. Connect t he Coaxial or Optical Digital
OutputsI_ on the rearpanelofthe AVR110to
the matchingdigital inputconnections o n a CD-R
or MiniDisc recoldel.
5. Assemblethe AM LoopAntennasupplied
with the unit asshown below. Connectit to the
AM and 6ND screwterminalsO.
6. Connectthe suppliedFMantennato the FM
(75 ohm)connectionO. TheFM antennamay
be an externalroof antenna,an insidepowered
or wire lead antennaor a connectionfrom a
cableTVsystem.Notethat if the antennaor
connectionuses300-ohmtwindead cable,you
must usethe 300-ohm-to-75-ohmadapter sup-
plied with the unit to makethe connection.
7. Connectthe front, centerand surround
speakeroutputs_)_)_
to the respective
speakers.
Toensurethat all the audiosignalsare carried
to your speakers without lossof clarity or reso-
lution, we suggestthat you use high-quality
speakercable.Manybrandsof cable areavail-
able and the choiceof cable maybe influenced
by the distancebetweenyour speakers and the
receive_, the type of speakers you use, personal
preferences and otherfactors.Yourdealeror
installeris a valuableresourceto consultin
selectingthe proper cable.
Regardless o f the brandof cableselected,we
recommend that you usea cable constructed of
fine, multistlandcopperwith a gaugeof 14 or
smaller.Remember that in specifyingcable,the
lower the AWGnumber,the thickerthe cable.
Cablewith a gaugeof 16 may be usedfor short
runsof lessthan ten feet.We do not recom-
mendthat you usecableswith an AWGequiva-
lent of 18 or higherdueto the power lossand
degradationin performance that wilt occur.
Cablesthat are run insidewalls shouldhavethe
appropriatemarkingsto indicatelistingwith UL
CSAor otherappropriatetestingagencystan-
dards.Questions about runningcablesinside
walls shouldbe referredto your installeror a
licensedelectricalcontractorwho is familiar
with the NECand/orthe applicablelocalbuild-
ing codesinyour area.
Whenconnectingwiresto the speakers, b e cer-
tain to observeproperpolarity. Remember t o
connectthe "negative" or "black" wire to the
sameterminalon both the receiverandthe
speaker. S imilarly, t he "positive" or "red" wire
shouldbe connectedto like terminalson the
AVR110 andspeakec
NOTE:While mostspeakermanufacturers
adhereto an industryconventionof using black
terminalsfor negativeand red onesfor positive,
somemanufacturers may vary from this config-
uration.Toassureproperphaseandoptimal
performance, c onsultthe identificationplateon
your speakeror the speaker'smanualto verify
polarity. If you do not know the polarity of your
speaker, a skyour dealerfor advice beforepro-
ceeding,or consultthe speaker'smanufaeturec
We also recommendthat the length of cable
usedto connect speakerpairsbe identical.
For example,usethe samelength piece of
cable to connect the frontdeft and front-right
or surrounddeft and surround-right speakers,
even if the speakersare a different distance
from the AVR110.
8. Connections to a subwooferare normatiy
made via a line-levelaudio connectionfrom the
Subwoofer Output t_! to the line-levelinput
of a subwooferwith a built-in amplifiecWhen a
passivesubwooferis used,the connectionfirst
goesto a poweramplifiel, which wilt be con-
nectedto one or moresubwooferspeakers. I f
you are using a poweredsubwooferthat does
not haveline-levelinput connections, f ollow the
instructionsfurnishedwith the speakerfor con-
nection information.
Video Equipment Connections
Videoequipmentis connected in the sameman-
ner asaudiocomponents. Again,the useof high-
quality interconnect c ablesis recommended t o
preserve signalquality.
1. Connecta VCR'sor othervideo source's
audio and video Play/Out j acks to the Video 1
or Video 2 Injacks _€_'_
on the rear
panel.TheAudio andVideoRecord/In jacks on
the VCRshouldbe connectedto the Video I
or Video 2 Outjacks _31_)
on the
AVR110.
2. Connectthe analog audioand video outputs
of a satellite receiver, c ableTVconverteror
televisionset or any othervideo sourceto the
Video 3jacks €_)I_).
3. Connectthe analog audio and video
outputs of a DVDor laser discplayerto the
DVBjacks _).
4. Connectthe digital audio outputsof a DVD
ptayel, satellite reeeivel, c able box or HDTV con-
verterto the appropriateOptical or Coaxial
Digital Inputs _i'_J_].
5. Connectthe Video Monitor Output i_
jacks on the receiverto the compositeor
