c.
Type the following command at the Command Prompt:
dpwinsvc -s
This command starts the Data Protector Express service on the local machine.
Unknown error appears when I restore files on Microsoft Windows.
Windows stores security information in the data stream on the backup media. This information depends
on the registry from the file's original location. If you are restoring to a different system or are restoring
files to the same machine with a new registry, the security information on the media is no longer valid.
To prevent this problem, open the Advanced Options window from the Options page of the restore job
and clear the Parent security and Child security options. This causes Data Protector Express to restore the
data in the file, but not the security information, such as the owner or access control lists for the file.
Unable to create a directory appears when I restore files on Microsoft Windows.
This message appears if you do not have the appropriate Windows rights to the hard drive during the
restore. Make sure you have full control on the CREATOR OWNER and SYSTEM rights on the Local Disk
Properties screen for the hard drive. Then try again. After you have restored the files, you can change the
Windows rights to their original settings.

Recovering a Virtual Library

This recovery process of a Data Protector Express Virtual Library is needed for situations where the
storage groups are still available (on a network share) but the Data Protector Express installation is not
recoverable any more.
Overview
Data Protector Express Virtual Loaders are a set of control files, which are stored in the installation path of
Data Protector Express and storage groups, which can be stored anywhere in the network. These storage
groups are sufficient to recovery a Data Protector Express Virtual Loader and through this to recover the
system(s), which used that storage groups for backup.
There is a certain analogy to physical tape libraries, where the control files would represent the control
files, while the storage groups would represent the tape media. The first step would be to insert the media
into the library, which makes them visible, but not yet usable (foreign). Once the media is imported into
the catalog, they are fully usable (local).
This chapter contains important information pertaining to the functionality of the Virtual Library Recovery.

How to

An example of the value of the Data Protector Express Virtual Library Recovery would be if a user looses
their configuration files located in the D2D subdirectory where Data Protector Express was installed. The
Virtual Library that was using these files is now either offline or has been removed from the database.
The user now has orphaned extent files located in different folders or UNC paths spread across their
network. In order for the user to use these backups, they have to create a new Virtual Library, and
complete the steps outlined below.
1.
Use the D2D Device Wizard to create a new Virtual Library. This Virtual Library will default to a
storage folder located in the D2D subdirectory.
2.
Open the property page of that new Virtual Library and select the Library Configuration pane.
Under Storage Folder Options, delete the default location
