To engage second gear:
CAUTION
Shift gears fairly quickly but without
great force. Develop a "feel" for shifting
with your left toe. Never lug the engine,
that is, running it at too low an rpm
which can damage the vehicle's engine,
a n d c a u s e s r o u g h a n d j u d d e r i n g
acceleration.
Rotate the throttle grip (2) clockwise (Pos.
u
A), pull in the clutch lever (3) and lift the shift
lever (4) straight up. Release the clutch
lever (3) gently, and rotate the throttle
counterclockwise to accelerate.
Repeat the last two operations to shift from
u
second, to third, to fourth, to fifth, to sixth.
WARNING
If the engine oil pressure logo "
comes on during the normal running of
the engine, this means
that the oil system is not developing
su f f i c i e n t p r e s su re . I n t h i s ca s e ,
i m m e d i a t e l y s t o p t h e e n g i n e a n d
contact your Local aprilia Dealer.
Failure to heed this warning can lead to
engine seizure, upset, and serious
injury or even death.
Shifting from higher to lower gears, that
is, downshifting, is accomplished as
follows:
u Rotate the throttle grip (2) clockwise
(Pos. A), slow the vehicle with the
brakes, pull in the clutch lever (3),
depress the shift lever (4) with your toe,
release the clutch.
WARNING
Shift gears one by one. Simultaneously
downshifting more than one gear may
c a u s e t h e e n g i n e t o e x c e e d i t s

maximum rated rpm (red line). This can
seriously damage the engine.
Before and during downshift, rotate the
throttle clockwise to decelerate in order
to avoid overspeeding the engine.
Downshifting should be carried out in
the following situations:
u When riding downhill or when braking, in
order to increase the braking action by
using the compression of the engine.
u When riding uphill if the engine lugs
down (rpm decreases).
To shift down, proceed as follows:
u Release the throttle grip (2) (Pos.A).
If necessary, apply both brakes lightly to
u
slow down the vehicle.
u Pull the clutch lever (3) and lower the
gear shift lever (4) to shift down.
u Release the brake levers if you have
pulled them.
u Release the clutch lever and accelerate
moderately.
NOTE
The cooling fans function only
when the ignition key is in the "
position.
CAUTION
Do not leave the ignition key in the "
(OFF) position since the cooling fans
will not run regardless of the coolant
temperature. This will cause the coolant
temperature to continue to rise.
