3. Engine will not start. Cranking
speed normal.
4. Engine is hard to start.

Probable Cause
a. Fuel tank empty or fuel
shut-off valve closed.
b. Loose connections,
damaged hoses or fuel
lines between fual tank
and fuel pump.
c. Plugged or defective fuel
filter or air filter.
d. Faulty installation.
e. Faulty fuel pump: relief
valve not seating.
f. Faulty fuel pump: Worn
pump gears or damaged
pump drive.
g. Defect in injector racks or
linkage.
a. Low ambient temperature,
or limited fuel.
b. Low compression which
may be caused by any of
the following:
c. Sticking or burned exhaust
valves .
d. Compression rings worn or
broken.
e. Cylinder head gasket
leaking.
f. Improper valve clearance
adjustment.
Corrective Action
Make certain that valve is open.
Fill fuel tank if necessary.
Tighten all fittings and
connections. Replace any
damaged hoses or fuel links.
Do not overlook the possibility of
restricted flow through fuel filters.
Also check gaskets for leaking or
damaged condition. Check air
filter indicator.
Restriction fitting missing from
return line.
An open relief valve will cause
low output pressure. Take
corrective action if necessary.
Check pump for normal
operation. Replace if defective.
Check position of fuel shut-off
lever (Sect. 2-3, Fig. 7, item 4).
Should be in full CLOCKWISE
position. Check all fuel control
linkage to make certain injec- tors
are functional.
Check causes and remedies
under ENGINE, Trouble 3, above.
Check compression in
accordance with Para. 9, C and
D.
Cylinder head must be removed
and overhauled to correct this
condition.
Check rings in accordance with
Para. 9, E, (1).
Check gasket in accordance with
Para. 9, E, (2).
Check and adjust valve clearance
in accordance with instructions in
Duetz Diesel Instruction Manual.
