When there is a baby in the house a microwave oven is a big help. The bottle can be heated quickly, and when the baby starts on
solid food, porridge, fruit purée and vegetable purée can be prepared quickly in the microwave.
Heating baby bottles
From the refrigerator + 5 °C.
Remove the teat or top before heating the bottle in the
microwave at 1000 watts microwave.
50 ml 15 secs.
100 ml 20-25 secs.
150 ml 25-30 secs.
200 ml 30-35 secs.
250 ml 35-40 secs.
Shake the bottle thoroughly, making sure that the milk feels
warm enough (37 °C) on the inside of the palm of the hand.
Heating of mother's milk
There has been some debate as to whether maternal milk can be
heated in microwave ovens without destroying the antibodies in
it. Tests carried out by the Danish Food Institute show that
variations in the antibodies are not dependent on the heating
method - microwave oven or water bath - but merely on
temperature.
Millet porridge
1.5 dl milk or water
2 tbsp. millet flakes
1 tsp. butter
Mix the ingredients in a deep dish. Microwave at 1000 watts for
1 min. 30 secs, until the porridge begins to boil.
Stir the porridge to a suitable consistency. Add butter, and finally
3-4 measures of mother's milk substitute powder when the
porridge has cooled down a little (40-50 °C) (this depends on the
make and manufacturers instructions). A little fruit purée can be
added to the porridge later.
Maize porridge
As millet porridge. Substitute the millet flakes for maize flour. Stir
the porridge for 1 min. Stir the porridge thoroughly after boiling.

Baby food

Heating ready prepared baby food
Pour the baby food on to a plate. Cover with a lid. Before
serving it is important to stir the food and check that it is not
too hot.
1000 watts microwave
100 g approx. 40 seconds
150 g approx. 1 min.
200 g approx. 1 min. 10 secs.
Potato-vegetable purée
100 g potatoes
50 g carrots
1/2 dl water
1-2 small pieces of broccoli, cauliflower or leek
1 tsp. butter.
Divide the vegetables into small pieces and place them in a bowl
or deep plate. Add water and cover with a lid or microfilm.
Microwave at 1000 watts microwave for about 3 mins., or use the
Vegetable auto program.
Add butter and purée the vegetables with a fork or food blender.
Stir in the purée with mother's milk/mother's milk substitute.
As the child grows, or by agreement with the health nurse, meat,
fish and other vegetables can be added to the purée.
