Sense Data

When a drive encounters an error, it makes sense data available. You can use IBM
device drivers to examine the sense data and determine errors. Instructions for
downloading, installing, and properly configuring the IBM device drivers are
available in the IBM Tape Device Drivers Installation and User's Guide. The IBM device
drivers may conflict with some commercial software applications unless properly
configured. To avoid conflicts on Windows operating systems, refer to your device
driver's procedures for setting the driver to manual startup mode. For applications
that use Open Systems device drivers that are provided by IBM (for example, AIX,
Linux, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, Windows 2003, and Windows 2000), the IBM Tape Device
Drivers Installation and User's Guide contains information about how to obtain sense
data after an error has occurred.
If your application uses other device drivers, see the appropriate documentation for
those drivers to obtain the sense data.

Description
The operation failed to unload a tape
cartridge because of a drive hardware
error or the tape may be damaged and
stuck in the drive.
The operation failed because of a
problem with the firmware.
Action Required
If the tape cartridge will not unload from
the drive:
1. If possible, manually remove the tape
cartridge from the drive and inspect it
for damage. If damaged, discard it.
2. Try a power cycle of the entire library.
This causes the drive to reset and
attempt to rewind and unload when
power is restored. If the cartridge
unloads, remove it from the library
and inspect it. If damaged, discard it.
If the tape is stuck in the drive:
1. Attempt to unload the cartridge from
the drive using the host backup
application that is currently using the
drive, or via the remote or local UI.
Update the firmware. See "Methods of
Updating Firmware" on page 7-20.
