Emergency tensioning device, seat belt force limiter
The seat belts for the front and rear seats in this vehicle are equipped
with emergency tensioning devices (also called "pretensioners") and
force limiters.
The pretensioners are pyrotechnic devices which, if activated, keep the
belt properly fitted across the occupant's body.
2
A seat belt pretensioner will be activated by the airbag control unit if,
in a head-on collision, the impact severity exceeds a preset limit and the
belt is deformed.
The pretensioners are activated based on the seat belt status, not on the
occupant's presence.
If a seat belt is not latched, the pretensioner for that seat will not be activated
even if the occupant is seated in that position.
The seat belt retractor is equipped with a force limiter device, that is
designed to reduce the force that the seat belts exert on the occupant's
body in the event of a crash. This device controls the level of force with
which the belt is released during a collision.
The pretensioners (emergency tensioning devices) can be used once only.
If a pretensioner of a seat belt has been activated, this belt must be replaced.

Maintenance of the seat belts and pretensioners
• Following a collision of a certain severity, replace the seat belts that
were worn at the time even if they may not appear to be damaged.
• Periodically check that the screws on the anchoring points are tight
and that the belt is in perfect condition and slides smoothly.
• The belt must be kept clean; the presence of any dirt could jeopardise
the efficiency of the belt retractor.
• To clean the seat belt, wash it by hand with mild soap and water and
let it dry. Do not use strong detergents, bleach or aggressive solvents,
as they can weaken the fibres.
Make sure the retractors do not get wet: proper functioning is
ensured only if they are kept dry.
• The pretensioner requires no maintenance or lubrication. If immersed
in water or mud, the pretensioner must necessarily be replaced.
The pretensioner must be replaced at the intervals indicated in the "Warranty
and Service Book and Maintenance Schedule".
All work on any part of the safety system components
must be carried out by the F
It is not permitted to remove or make modifications of any kind to the seat
belts, belt retractors and pretensioners.
Maintenance work involving strong impacts, vibrations or heating of the
pretensioner area may activate them; vibrations caused by road bumps will
not have this effect.
