The system is designed to prevent atmospheric pollution caused by fuel
system evaporation.
The fuel vapours coming from the separator are collected by the active
carbon filter where they are absorbed and retained when the engine is
off.
If any work needs to be performed on the fuel supply
system and/or on the fuel vapour emission control
devices, the battery must be disconnected, as indicated on the
labels found on the tank and the active carbon filter.
The tank must only be drained using the tap located on

the bottom of the tank. We recommend that you have
this operation performed by an authorised service centre of

ETWORK
When the engine is running and depending upon its operating
conditions, the Motronic ECUs control the canister purge solenoid
valves so that the fuel vapours retained by the carbon filter are taken in
by the intake manifolds through the specific lines.
The air from the compartment enters the active carbon filter through
an air pump controlled by the engine ECU. Before the pump there is a
filter that prevents foreign matter from entering the system.
The diagnostic pump cyclically generates a vacuum in the anti-
evaporation system, in order to detect any leaks.
The tank filler neck has a narrower section to prevent accidental
refuelling with leaded fuel.

Inertia switch
This safety switch is located in the passenger compartment, on the
underfloor, in front of the driver's seat and, in the event of a collision, it
deactivates the fuel pump relay.
Activation of this switch is indicated by the illumination of the relative
icon on the TFT display (see page 31) and by the activation of the
hazard warning lights.
When the switch activates, the doors are unlocked (if they were locked)
and the central dome lights are switched on.
The system can be reactivated by pressing the button on
top of the switch.
