Mounting and Wiring VMA1400 Series Controllers Technical Bulletin
Solution 2
To ensure a good connection:
• refer to Table 15 for the recommended (not required) phone plug
to use with each type of commonly used wire when connecting to
the VMA assembly 8-position modular phone jack.
• cut off the defective phone plug and re-crimp a new phone plug
onto the lead with the crimp tool recommended by the
manufacturer of that plug.
Note:
Phone plug crimping tools provided with packages of phone
plug connectors often are intended for a very limited number
of applications and make ineffective connections when used
beyond the stated limit (typically, 100 uses for the plastic
crimping tool). The tool provided with a package of
connectors is compatible only with that manufacturer's
connectors.
If the VMA Zone Temperature continues to drift, one or more of the
field connections is still bad.
Typically, phone plugs and jacks are standardized to a Federal
Communications Commission specification (Part 68) and to
Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) standards. This specifies
dimensions to ensure that the phone plugs and jacks mate.
Table 15 lists the AMP plugs that Johnson Controls has identified
for use with the 8-position modular phone jack. Other manufacturers
produce phone plugs that also connect properly to the phone jack.
Confirm that the correct plug is used for each application and that the
plug is manufactured to the universal standard so that proper mating
occurs.
Note:
When using phone plugs to terminate wire, match the phone
plug with the type of wire used in the application:
• If crimping to solid wire, use a phone plug designed for solid wire.
• If crimping to stranded wire, use a phone plug designed for
stranded wire.
Table 16 identifies the AMP Crimp Tool for use with the plug
assemblies listed in Table 15.
