Wheels, Tires

In case of replacem ent we re co m
mend you use tires of identical design,
version and brand.
See any MERCEDES-BENZ service
station fo r inform ation on tested and
recom m ended wheels and tires fo r
sum m er and w inter operation. They
will also offer m ore advice concerning
tire service and purchase.
M ount single newly acquired tires on
the fron t wheels. If any tires are
replaced and the spare tire is new
and of the same m ake and version,
m ount the spare wheel on the vehicle
as road wheel. We recom m end that
you break in new tires fo r approx.
100 km /6 0 m iles at m oderate speed.
For tire specifications, refer to " T ech
nical Data" .
Rotating wheels:
The w heels can be rotated according
to the degree of tire w ear w hile re ta in
ing the sam e sense of rotation. Rotat
ing, however, should be carried out
before the characteristic tire wear pat
tern (shoulder w ear on fro n t wheels
and tread center w ear on rear wheels)
becom es visible at a m ileage of
56
5000— 10 000 km /3 0 0 0 — 6000 miles
as otherw ise the driving properties
deteriorate.
Slowly leaking a ir(e.g. due to a nail in
the tire) may cause dam age to th e tire
such as tread separation. R e gu lartire
pressure checks at intervals of no
m ore than 14 days are therefore es
sential. For the tire pressure checks,
keep in m ind that hot tires show high
er pressure than cold tires. See tire
pressure ch art on last page.
S hould the tire pressure decrease
constantly, check w hether foreign o b
jects have penetrated the tire or if rim
o r valve allow the air to leak.
Thoroughly clean the inner side of the
wheels a n y tim e you rotate the w heels
or wash vehicle underside.
Dented or bent rim s cause tire pres
sure loss and dam age to the tire
beads. For this reason, check rim s for
dam age at regular intervals. The rim
flanges m ust be checked fo r wear be-
fo re a tire is m ounted. Remove burrs,
if there are any.
O bserve wheel bolts!
1
For forged light alloy rim s only
2
For steel rim s only
Caution:
Do not use the long wheel bolts (1) in
tended fo r light alloy wheels only
when m ointing steel rim s. Use only the
shorter bolts (2 ) fo r the steel rims.
