Automatic Modem Switching
Whenever a calling modem issues the reverse modem tone to request a
data communication, the Ultra Switch 100 can recognize the reverse
modem tone and route the line to the modem port.
Reverse Modem Detection
N
ote:
The method that requires
modem tone is called reverse modem communication. Unlike a fax
machine, a calling modem listens for a tone from the receiving
modem before sending its own tone. This, in turn, makes Ultra
Switch 100 unable to distinguish the caller's communi-cation type
and can not switch to the modem port as supposed. The reverse
modem detection, however, reverses the normal procedure for
modem communica-tion. Indeed, the calling modem now issues the
so-called reverse modem tone to signal the receiving modem. As a
result, the Ultra Switch 100 can notify a request for computer
communication upon reception of the reverse modem tone. In order
to carry out reverse modem detection, modems on the calling site
and the receiving site must both be set for reverse modem activity.
Notice that not all modems are able to participate in reverse
modem communication. Refer to your modem's manual for
function specifications, or contact the manufacturer to determine
whether your modem can participate in reverse modem
communication. Consult your modem's operation guide to find
how to set the "Reverse Modem Communication" feature. Instruct
the caller who wants to reach your computer to follow these steps:
