PISTON RING INSPECTION

1. Measure:
S Side clearance (piston to piston rings)
Out of specification ! Replace the piston
and the piston rings as a set.
NOTE:
Before measuring the side clearance remove
the carbon deposits from the piston ring
grooves and rings.
2. Position:
S Piston ring
(into the cylinder)
NOTE:
Using the piston crown push the ring into the
cylinder so that the ring will be at a right angle to
the cylinder bore.
a 40 mm
3. Measure:
S End gap
Out of specification ! Replace.
NOTE:
You cannot measure the end gap on the expan-
der spacer of the oil ring. If the oil ring rails show
excessive gap, replace all three rings.

Side clearance (piston ring):
Top ring:
0.03 X 0.07 mm
<Limit>: 0.12 mm
2nd ring:
0.02 X 0.06 mm
<Limit>: 0.12 mm
End gap:
Top ring:
0.15 X 0.30 mm
<Limit>: 0.55 mm
2nd ring:
0.30 X 0.45 mm
<Limit>: 0.80 mm
Oil ring:
0.2 X 0.7 mm
