power steering as already used in the B-Class
(model 246). It consists of the rack-and-pinion
steering gear, torque sensor, actuator motor and
control unit.
The steering force assistance is transmitted by the
actuator motor to the rack-and-pinion steering gear
to support the steering torque provided by the
driver.
Electric power steering includes the following func-
tions:
• Steering power assistance
• Steering assistance
• Reduction in holding moment
• Limp-home mode
• Display in instrument cluster
• Semiautomatic parking in/pulling out of a
parking space

Direct-Steer system
For vehicles with code (213) Direct-Steer system a
rack and pinion steering gear with variable gear
ratio is used.
The toothed rack configuration includes a minor
increase in the gear ratio from the central position
from a steering angle of approx. 6° onwards. This in
turn enables a more nimble steering behavior to be
achieved, particularly in urban traffic, when maneu-
vering or on twisty roads.
The reduction in steering-wheel turns lock to lock to
2.4 results in enhanced comfort, particularly when
parking.
