Checking the Engine Oil Level

Service Interval: Before each use or daily
The engine is shipped with oil in the crankcase;
however, the oil level must be checked before and after
the engine is first started.
The crankcase capacity is approximately 10 qt. (9.5 l)
with the filter.
Use high-quality engine oil that meets the following
specifications:
• API Classification Level Required: CH-4, CI-4 or
higher.
• Preferred oil: SAE 15W-40 (above 0°F)
• Alternate oil: SAE 10W-30 or 5W-30 (all
temperatures)
Note: Toro Premium Engine oil is available
from your distributor in either 15W-40 or 10W-30
viscosity. See the parts catalog for part numbers.
Note: The best time to check the engine oil is
when the engine is cool before it has been started
for the day. If it has already been run, allow the
oil to drain back down to the sump for at least 10
minutes before checking. If the oil level is at or
below the 'add' mark on the dipstick, add oil to
bring the oil level to the 'full' mark. Do not overfill.
If the oil level is between the 'full' and 'add' marks,
no oil addition is required.
1. Park the machine on a level surface.
2. Unlock the engine cover latches and open the
engine cover.
3. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, install the
dipstick into the tube, and pull it out again.
The oil level should be in the safe range (Figure 14).
1. Dipstick
4. If the oil is below the safe range, remove the fill cap
(Figure 15) and add oil until the level reaches the
FULL mark. Do not overfill.
1. Oil fill cap
Note: When using different oil, drain all old oil
from the crankcase before adding new oil.
5. Install the oil fill cap and dipstick.
6. Close the engine cover and secure it with the latches.
