EMI Warning

®
Shoprider
s cooters may be susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is a
kind of interfering e lec trom agnetic energy (E M) emitted from sources such as radio stations,
TV stations, amateur radio (HAM) trans mitters , two-way radio, and cellu lar phones . The
interferenc e (from radio wave sources) can cause the s cooter to release its brakes , move
by itself, or move in unintended directions . It can als o permanently damage the s cooter's
c ontrol system. The s ourc es of radiated EMI c an be broadly clas sified into three types:
1. Hand-held portable transc eivers (transmitters-receivers ) with the antenna mounted
directly on the trans mitting unit. Exam ples include: citizens band (CB) radios , "walkie
talkie", s ecurity, fire and police transc eivers, cellula r telephones, and other personal
c ommunic ation devices .
NOTE! So me ce llular telephones and similar devices transmit signals while the y are
ON, even whe n not be ing used.
2. Medium-range mobile transceivers , s uc h as thos e us ed in police c ars, fire truc ks ,
ambulanc es , and ta xis. Thes e us ually have the antenna mounted on the outside of the
vehicle.
3. Long-range trans mitters and transc eivers, s uc h as commercial broadcast transmitters
(radio and TV broadc as t antenna towers) and amateur (HAM) radios.
NOTE! Othe r types of hand-held device s, such as cordless phones, laptop
computers, AM/FM radios, TV se ts, CD players, and casse tte playe rs, and small
appliance s, such as electric shave rs and hair dryers, so far as we know, are not
like ly to cause problems to the scooter.
Scooter Electromagnetic Interfe rence (EMI)
Becaus e EM energ y rap idly becomes m ore intense as one moves closer to the transmitting
antenna (s ourc e), the EM fie lds from hand-held rad io sources (transc eivers) are of special
c oncern. It is possible to unintentionally bring high levels of EM energ y very clos e to the
scooter's control system while us ing these devices . This c an affect scooter movement and
braking. There fore, the warn ings lis ted below are recommended to preven t poss ible
interferenc e with the control system of the scooter.
