For more information on HP Care Pack Services, see the HP website (http://www.hp.com/services/carepack). Rack planning resources The rack resource kit ships with all HP branded or Compaq branded 9000, 10000, and H9 series racks. For more information on the content of each resource, see the rack resource kit documentation. Optimum environment When installing the server in a rack, select a location that meets the environmental standards described in this section.
HP servers draw in cool air through the front and expel warm air through the rear. Therefore, the front and rear rack doors must be adequately ventilated to allow ambient room air to enter the cabinet, and the rear door must be adequately ventilated to allow the warm air to escape from the cabinet.
Because of the high ground-leakage currents associated with multiple servers connected to the same power source, HP recommends the use of a PDU that is either permanently wired to the building’s branch circuit or includes a nondetachable cord that is wired to an industrial-style plug. NEMA locking-style plugs or those complying with IEC 60309 are considered suitable for this purpose.
If you are installing the server into a telco rack, order the appropriate option kit at the RackSolutions.com website (http://www.racksolutions.com/hp). Follow the server-specific instructions on the website to install the rack brackets. Use the following information when connecting peripheral cables and power cords to the server.
WARNING: This server is very heavy. To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment: Observe local occupational health and safety requirements and guidelines for manual • material handling. • Get help to lift and stabilize the product during installation or removal, especially when the product is not fastened to the rails.
Remote deployment installation—To remotely deploy an operating system, use Insight Control server deployment for an automated solution. For additional system software and firmware updates, download the HP Service Pack for ProLiant from the HP website (http://www.hp.com/go/spp/download). Software and firmware must be updated before using the server for the first time, unless any installed software or components require an older version.
Hardware options installation Introduction If more than one option is being installed, read the installation instructions for all the hardware options and identify similar steps to streamline the installation process. WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the drives and the internal system components to cool before touching them.

3 DIMMs per channel at 1066 MT/s running at 1.35V. This equates to up to 20% less power at the DIMM level with no performance penalty. In addition, the industry supports UDIMM at 2 DIMMs per channel at 1066 MT/s. HP SmartMemory supports 2 DIMMs per channel at 1333 MT/s, or 25% greater bandwidth. Memory subsystem architecture The memory subsystem in this server is divided into channels.
Channel Population order Slot number For the location of the slot numbers, see "DIMM slots (on page 11)." This multi-channel architecture provides enhanced performance in Advanced ECC mode. This architecture also enables Lockstep and Online Spare Memory modes. This server supports RDIMMs and UDIMMs. DIMM slots in this server are identified by number and by letter.
E = UDIMM (unbuffered with ECC) L = LRDIMM (load reduced) For the latest supported memory information, see the QuickSpecs on the HP website (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/ProductBulletin.html). At the website, choose the geographic region, and then locate the product by name or product category.
The server can continue to function if a single-bit or multi-bit memory failure within a single DRAM device occurs. For the latest memory configuration information, see the QuickSpecs on the HP website (http://www.hp.com). Intel Gen8 supported memory bandwidth The following tables show the supported memory for each DIMM type.
UDIMM * RDIMM supports 1.35V 3DPC at 1066. Third-party memory supports 1.5V 3DPC at 1066. † UDIMM is supported at 2DPC at 1333 using HP SmartMemory only. Third-party memory supports up to 2DPC at 1066. RDIMM maximum memory configurations The following table lists the maximum memory configurations possible with 8- or 16-GB RDIMMs.
Lockstep mode can correct any single DRAM device failure on x4 and x8 DIMM types. The DIMMs in each channel must have identical HP part numbers. Lockstep mode uses channel 1 and channel 2. Channel 3 is not populated. Because channel 3 cannot be populated when using Lockstep mode, the maximum memory capacity is lower than Advanced ECC mode.
• DIMMs may be installed individually. Single-processor Advanced ECC population order For Advanced ECC mode configurations with a single processor, populate the DIMM slots in the following order: • RDIMM: Sequentially in alphabetical order (A through L) • UDIMM: A through H, sequentially in alphabetical order. Do not populate DIMM slots I through L. Multi-processor Advanced ECC population order For Advanced ECC mode configurations with multiple processors, populate the DIMM slots for each processor in the following order:...
First: A, B, C, and D Last: E, F, G, and H Do not populate slots I, J, K, or L. After installing the DIMMs, use RBSU to configure the system for Lockstep memory support. Online Spare population guidelines For Online Spare mode configurations, observe the following guidelines: •...
Power up the server (on page 17). If removed, install the rack bezel (on page 58). If you are installing DIMMs in online spare or lock-step configuration, configure this mode in RBSU ("HP ROM-Based Setup Utility" on page 74). Hot-plug drive guidelines When adding drives to the server, observe the following general guidelines: •...
Removing the drive blank Remove the component as indicated. Installing a hot-plug drive The server can support four drives in a LFF configuration and up to eight drives in a SFF configuration. To install the component: Remove the drive blank. Prepare the drive.

ASR is a feature that causes the system to restart when a catastrophic operating system error occurs, such as a blue screen, ABEND (does not apply to HP ProLiant DL980 Servers), or panic. A system fail-safe timer, the ASR timer, starts when the System Management driver, also known as the Health Driver, is loaded. When the operating system is functioning properly, the system periodically resets the timer.
