The gearbox management is equipped with
diverse driving programmes. Depending on
the style of driving or on the momentary
situation, an e c o n o m i c , that is a low-con-
sumption, ora more " s p o r t y " programme
will be selected.
The programme is selected a u t o m a t i -

Depending on road resistance, for example
when trailer towing or on uphill stretches, a
programme is automatically selected which
provides more power by shifting into a
lower gear. This prevents frequent gear

In positions " P " and " N " with the ignition
switched on the selector lever is locked. To
move the selector lever out of these posi-
tions the brake pedal must be depressed
and the selector lever button pushed-in.
This prevents a gear being engaged inadver-
tently and the vehicle unintentionally mov-
A delay circuit prevents the selector lever
from locking w h e n it is moved quickly past
the " N " position (for instance from " R " to
" D " ) . This enables for example the vehicle
to be "rocked" out of a "bogged d o w n "
position. The shift lock only locks the selec-
tor lever if it is left in the " N " position for
more than about 1 second without the
brake pedal being depressed.
At speeds above 5 km/h the selector lever
lock is automatically switched-off in posi-
tion " N "

The driving wheels are locked mechanically.
The parking lock may only be engaged
w h e n the vehicle is stationary. Before mov-
ng the lever in or out of the " P " positionthe
lock button in the selector lever handle
must be pressed. Before moving the selec-
tor lever out of the " P " position with the
ignition switched on, the brake pedal must
also be depressed.
Depending upon the model the display can
also be fitted in the instrument panel.
R - R e v e r s e g e a r
The reverse gear should only be engaged
when the vehicle is stationary and w i t h the
engine idling. Before engaging the position
" R " from the positions " P " or " N " the
brake pedal must be depressed and the lock
button in the selector lever handle must
also be pressed.
The reversing lights come on then the se-
lector lever is in the " R " position with the
ignition switched on.
N - N e u t r a l ( i d l i n g p o s i t i o n )
To move the lever out of neutral w h e n sta-
tionary or at speeds below 5 km/h and with
ignition switched on depress the brake
pedal and press the lock button in the selec-
tor lever handle.
D - N o r m a l d r i v i n g p o s i t i o n
The four forward gears are shifted up and
down automatically depending upon engine
load and road speed.
Under certain driving conditions it is advan-
tageous to engage one of the following de-
scribed selector lever positions.
3 - P o s i t i o n f o r " h i l l y " r e g i o n s
This selector position is recommended in
situations where the gearbox alternates fre-
quently between 3rd and 4th gears in the
" D " position.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are shifted up
and down automatically depending upon
engine load, road speed and selected pro-
gramme (E or S). The 4th gear is not en-
gaged. This increases the engine braking ef-
fect when the accelerator pedal is released.
