G l o w plug s y s t e m
After switching to the driving position (igni-
tion on), the required glow plug warm-up
time is indicated by a lamp which is con-
trolled by the coolant temperature.
C o l d starting aid
To facilitate starting 50 and 55 kW en-
gines from cold, there is a cold starting de-
vice (cold starting aid) in the injection pump.
The cold starting device is actuated w h e n
the knob on the left of the steering column
is pulled out fully.
50 and 55 kW engines
Starting a c o l d engine
At ambient temperatures of between
+ 1 8 ° C and - 1 5
C
C , pull the cold start knob
out fully before operating the starter.
At lower temperatures, the knob should not
be pulled out until engine is firing reg-
ularly - the engine will then start more
readily.
Turn the key in the ignition lock to posi-
tion 2 - see page 121 - the glow plug warn-
ing lamp comes on. It goes out when the
ignition temperature is reached - see page
21.
While the g l o w plugs are w o r k i n g do
not s w i t c h o n any heavy current
consumers
because
this
w o u l d
place an unnecessary
load on
the
battery.
When the warning lamp goes out, start
the engine immediately.
Do not depress the accelerator while start-
ing.
If the engine only fires irregularly, continue
to operate the starter a few seconds longer
(30 seconds at maximum) until the eng

runs under its own power.

If the engine does not start, repeat preglow
and try starting it again as described. If the
engine still does not start the fuse for the
Diesel glow plugs may have blown - see
Booklet 3.2, " F u s e s " .
Push the cold start aid knob in fully as
soon as the engine has reached its normal
operating temperature.
Starting a w a r m engine
The glow plug lamp does not come on - the
engine can be started straight away. Do not
pull the cold start aid knob and do not press
the accelerator pedal.

Turn the key in the ignition lock to posi-

on. It goes out w h e n the ignition tempera-
ture is reached.

Starting a w a r m engine
The glow plug lamp does not come on - the
engine can be started straight away.
Starting after tank has been run
empty
If the tank on vehicles with a diese! engine
was empty, starting after filling with diesel
fuel can take longer than normal - up to one
minute. This is because the fuel system
must first be freed of air before starting.

When engine has been r u n n i n g fast
for a long t i m e , let it idle for about
2 minutes before s w i t c h i n g off
to
prevent a build up of heat.
Warning
After
the
engine
has
been
stopped
the
fan
can
c o n t i n u e
running for a while (up to about
10
minutes) with the
ignition
s w i t c h e d off. It can also start to
run again suddenly after a short
time if
-
the
c o o l a n t
temperature
in-
creases due to heat build-up
-
w h e n engine is hot and the en-
gine c o m p a r t m e n t is heated
additionally
by
s t r o n g
sun-
light.
Special care must therefore be
taken w h e n w o r k i n g in the en-
gine c o m p a r t m e n t .
