Commissioning

After Installation Is Complete

In your own interest and for safety, in the United Kingdom, it is the law that all solid fuel appliances are

installed    by    competent    persons,    a    registered    installer    or    approved    by    your    local    building    control    ofﬁcer.    The

Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme (HETAS) require its members to work to recognised

standards.

Door Tension Adjustment

After installation and before commissioning adjust the door latch tension. The latch tension is adjusted by adding

or removing the shim washers behind the outer door latch.

This    w ill    a djust    t he    t ension    o f    t he    d oor    s eal    a gainst    t he    ﬁ rebox    b ody.

Air Supply

When    c ommissioning    t he    ﬁ re    e nsure    t hat    t he    a ir    s upply    i s    a dequate    f or    t he    ﬁ re.    P articular    a ttention    s hould    b e   

observed if there is a ceiling fan or extractor fan in the room or adjoining room as this may have an effect on the

draw    o f    t he    ﬂ ue    /    ﬁ re.    T he    ﬁ re    s hould    b e    t ested    w ith    t he    c eiling    o r    e xtractor    f an    o n    a nd    w ith    a ll    i nter-connecting   

doors to the room closed and then open. If required additional air may be required to overcome the extractor or

fan pressure.

Smoke Draw Test.

Ensure appliance is not alight.

Warm chimney for 10 minutes using a blowlamp or similar heating device.

Place    a    s moke    p ellet    i n    t he    w ood    t ray    o r    b asket    g rate    t owards    t he    f ront    o f    t he    o pening    o f    t he    ﬁ re    a nd    i gnite    t he   

pellet.

Open the air control valve and close the door.

Check    t hat    t he    s moke    i s    b eing    d rawn    u p    t he    ﬂ ue    a nd    t hat    i t    i s    d ischarging    s atisfactory    a t    t he    ﬂ ue    t erminal.

If    t he    t est    f ails    t hen    t he    ﬂ ue    a nd    a ir    s upply    s hould    b e    c hecked.    I f    t his    c annot    b e    r esolved    t hen    f urther    i nvestigation   

will be required or seek expert advice.

Light    t he    ﬁ re    a s    d etailed    i n    t he    l ighting    i nstructions    a nd    a llow    t he    a ppliance    t o    h eat    u p    t o    i ts    o perating    t emperature   

checking that no spillage occurs. There may be some fumes due to the burning off of protective oils and paint

curing. This should not be confused with spillage.

When the operating temperature has been reached, open the door slowly and carry out a spillage test with a

smoke match around the door opening.

If    excessive    spillage    occurs    then    the    ﬂue    and    air    supply    should    be    checked.    If    this    cannot    be    resolved    then   

further    i nvestigation    w ill    b e    r equired    o r    s eek    e xpert    a dvice.    A dvise    t he    c ustomer    n ot    t o    u se    t he    ﬁ re    u ntil    e xpert   

advice has been sought.

Notice Plate

Ensure that any notice plate is provided in line with the building regulations J4. The notice should contain

information    o n    t he    p erformance    c haracteristics    o f    t he    h earth,    ﬁ replace,    ﬂ ue    o r    c himney    a nd    i s    t o    b e    ﬁ xed    i n    a n   

appropriate place.

Cleaning Up

Immediately    a fter    i nstallation,    t he    v isible    p arts    o f    t he    ﬁ re    s hould    b e    c leaned    u p.    T hereafter,    t he    s urfaces    m ay    b e   

kept clean by using a light brush to remove dust and by occasional wiping with a lint-free cloth.
