Hearths, Fire Surrounds and Shelves

Hearths

The construction of hearths must be in line with the Building Regulations Document J.
Both the constructional hearth and the superimposed hearth must be made from non combustible material.
The constructional hearth must be at least 125mm thick and protrude 500mm forward from the front face of the
appliance and 150mm each side from the edge of the appliance. See diagram.
The superimposed hearth must be 225mm forward from the front face of the appliance and 150mm each side
from the edge of the appliance. See diagram.

Document J.

Fire Surrounds

Some fire surrounds require the fire to be set forward from the chimney breast or to be raised for aesthetic
reasons. E nsure t hat t hese r equirements a re t aken i nto a ccount w hen p ositioning t he fi re. T ake t his i nto a ccount
when f orming t he r ecess a nd f ront fi nished f ace o f t he fi replace f or t he fi re. T he m inimum d istance t o t he e dge
of a ny fi re s urround f rom t he e dge o f t he fi re f rame m ust b e m inimum 2 00mm ( 8").

Protection of Heat and Shelves

As on all heat producing appliances the use of flammable wall coverings directly above or to the sides of the
fire may lead to a fire hazard. Please bear this in mind when installing the appliance or decorating. Due to
the e xtreme t emperatures t hat c an b e a chieved a bove t he fi re a lways e nsure t hat a ny T V's, p aintings o r o ther
combustible i tems t hat m ay b e n ear d o n ot b ecome e xcessively h ot. F or T V's a lways c onsult t he m anufacturers
instructions to see if exposure to heat will cause damage.
