Attention:
• Electrostatic discharge can damage the battery card assembly and the 8708EM2 RAID adapter on
which the battery card assembly is installed. Always ground yourself and use a ground strap before
touching the battery card assembly or the 8708EM2 RAID adapter. Perform the installation procedure
at an ESD-safe workstation.
• When attaching the battery card assembly to a PCI Express slot, center the Phillips-head screw driver to
avoid damaging the screw head and do not over-tighten the screws as you might damage the battery
card assembly.
• The battery in the battery card assembly must recharge for at least six hours during fast charge under
normal operating conditions.
• The temperature of the battery card assembly is generally 15-20 degrees higher than the ambient
temperature during fast charge. Therefore, to complete a fast charge cycle, the ambient temperature
should be less than 45 degrees. If the ambient temperature exceeds 45 degrees, the fast charge cycle will
terminate prematurely, thus preventing the battery card assembly from reaching a fully charged state.
The battery card assembly mounts directly to the 8708EM2 SAS RAID controller using a small board-to-board
connector. To install the battery card assembly for the 8708EM2 SAS RAID controller, do the following:
1. Remove the battery card assembly from the package.
2. Insert the battery pack harness (as shown in "Top view" on page 66) into the 5-pin J4 battery pack
harness connector (as shown in "Bottom view" on page 66) on the back side of the battery card
assembly.
3. With the 8708EM2 SAS RAID controller on a flat, clean, and static-free surface, hold the battery card
assembly with the battery side up and the J5 board-to-board connector (as shown in "Bottom view"
on page 66) lining up with the J10 BBU (battery backup units) connector on the 8708EM2 SAS RAID
controller, as shown:

4. Carefully press the battery card assembly onto the 8708EM2 SAS RAID controller, so that the two
connectors are firmly joined.
5. Use the provided Phillips-head screws to secure the battery card assembly to the 8708EM2 SAS
RAID controller.
6. Install the 8708EM2 SAS RAID controller with the battery card assembly into a selected PCI Express slot
in your server. See "Installing the ThinkServer 8708EM2 RAID Adapter" on page 63.
