7 Troubleshooting
1 Engine will not crank
Possible fault
Faulty or discharged battery.
Fuse blown.
Loose or corroded connecti-
ons in starting circuit.
Faulty starter-switch or faulty
starter-relay.
Faulty starter-motor or pinion
does not engage.
Starter relay is not engaged
due to a voltage too low;
caused by a very long inter-
mediate cable from engine to
control panel.
Seized components.
Remedy
Check / recharge battery and
check engine alternator and/or
battery charger.
Replace.
Clean and tighten connections.
Check / replace.
Check / replace starter-motor.
Install an auxiliary starter relay
Repair.
2 Engine cranks but will not start, no smoke from
exhaust
Possible fault
Fuel stop valve closed.
(Nearly) Empty fuel tank.
Air in fuel system.
Fuel filter clogged with water
and/or contamination.
Leaking fuel supply line or fuel
injection line.
Faulty injector/injection pump..
Vent line of fuel supply tank
clogged.
Exhaust restricted.
Electric fuel pump not working. Check / clean.
Dirt in the inlet or outlet valves
of the electric fuel pump.
Electric fuel pump filter bloc-
ked.
Fault finding table
Remedy
Open.
Refill.
Check and bleed.
Check or replace.
Check / replace.
Check, replace if required.
Check / clean.
Check.
Install a strainer in the fuel line
between tank and engine.
Check / clean.
