Cylinder Lubrication
It is not necessary to remove !be fuel injectors from the cylinder head to squirt light lubricating oil into !be
cylinders for !be few months of normal lay-up. However,
if
you anticipate a longer lay-up period (12
montbs or more), we recommend that this procedure be performed. The light oil in !be cylinders will
prevent !be pistons rings from sticking to !be cylinder walls. Ensure that you have replacements for !be
injector and return line sealing washers. Remove the glow plugs and use this opening to squirt oil into
each cylinder. Tum !be engine over manually two revolutions before reinstalling the glow plugs.
Spares
Lay-up time provides a good opportunity to inspect the equipment to see if external items such as drive
belts or coolant hoses need replacement. Check your basic spares kit and order items not on hand, or
replace !bose items used during !be lay-up, such as filters and zinc anodes.
Batteries
If batteries are to be left on board during the lay-up period, ensure that they are fully charged, and will
remain !bat way, to prevent !bern from freezing. If there exists any doubt !bat the batteries will not
remain fully charged, or that they will be subjected to severe environmental conditions, remove the
batteries and store them in a warmer, more compatible environment.
Recommissioning
The recommissiorting of your Westerbeke unit after a seasonal lay-up generally follows the same
procedures as those presented in the "PREPARATIONS FOR STARTING" section,
regarding
preparation for starting and normal starts. However, some of the lay-up procedures will need to be
counter-acted before starting the engine.
1. Remove the oil-soaked cloths from the intake manifold and from the through-hull exhaust port.
2. Remove the sea water pump cover and gasket. Discard the gasket. Install the sea water pump impeller
removed during lay-up (or a replacement, if required). Install the sea water pump cover with a new cover
gasket.
WARNING
Wear rubber gloves, a rubber apron, and eye protection when servicing batteries.
Lead acid batteries emit hydrogen, a highIy-expIosive gas, which can be ignited by electrical
arcing or a lighted cigarette, cigar, or pipe. Do not smoke or allow an open flame near the battery being
serviced. Shut off all electrical equipment in the vicinity to prevent electrical arcing during servicing.
3. Reinstall !be batteries that were removed during the lay-up, and reconnect the battery cables, making
sure the terminals are clean and that the connections are tight. Check to ensure· that the batteries are
fully-charged.
