Smocking is a delicate, decorative treatment on children's
clothes or women's brouses.
Choose a soft, lightweight fabric such as batiste, gingham
or challis. Cut the fabric three times wider than the pro-
jected width. Set the stitch length at 4.0 and sew lines of
straight stitches 3t8"(lcm) apart across the area to be
smocked.
NOTE: _oosen the needle thread tension to make
gathering easier
Knot the threads along one edge
From the other edge,
pull the bobbin threads to distribute the gathers evenly.
Sew the smocking stitches between the straight seams.
Remove the straight stitches by pulling them out.

Stitch patterns #28, #36 (mode 2) and #21, #38
(mode 3) can also be used.
Use this stitch to join two pieces of fabric to create an open
work appearance and add design interest.
Fold under each fabric edge 518" (1.5 cm) and press. Pin
the two edges to paper or tear backing 1/8" apart. Sew
slowly, guiding the fabric so the needle catches the folded
edge on each side.
After finishing the sewing, take off the paper.
