To configure a serial port for a console connection [Expert]:
This procedure assumes that the selected serial port is physically connected to a console port on a
device.
1.
Select Expert - Ports - Physical Ports, select a port or ports and click Modify Selected Ports.
The General screen appears.
2.
Select an option from the Connection Protocol pull-down menu: Console (Telnet), Console
(SSH), Console (Telnet & SSH) or Console (Raw). The default is Console (Telnet).
3.
If desired, enter a name for the port in the Alias field.
4.
To change any of the other current settings, see To configure serial port connection settings to
match the connected devices [Expert]: on page 75.

To further configure the serial port perform the following tasks:
To configure user access and authentication, see Ports - Physical Ports - Access on page
76.
To configure the TCP Port number and other options see Ports - Physical Ports - Other on
page 84.
To configure a serial port for a terminal server [Expert]:
This procedure assumes that the selected serial port is physically connected to a terminal. For more
information on Terminal Server connection protocols see Ports - Physical Ports - General
connection protocols for terminals on page 72.

Select Expert - Ports - Physical Ports, select a port or ports to modify and click Modify
Selected Ports. The General screen appears.
2.
To configure a terminal to automatically connect to the console server, perform the following
steps:
a.
Select Local Terminal from the Connection Protocol pull-down menu.
b.
If desired, define a menu of servers at Expert - Applications - Terminal Profile Menu.
3.
If desired, enter a name for the port in the Alias field.
4.
Click the Other tab,
Result
Starts a SLIP session. Assumes the specified console server serial port is
connected to an external modem.
Starts a CSLIP session. Assumes the specified console server serial port is
connected to an external modem.
Configures the serial port for power management. Assumes an IPDU is
connected to the serial port.
