The second element under Policy Manager is Security Zones. Security Zones allow the
administrator to organize instruments into separately managed security units. Each zone contains
a default instrument that represents the security settings applied to all zone member instruments.
By creating zones and assigning instruments to them, the administrator implements a corporate or
site security topology that Policy Manager maintains automatically.
A right-hand pane displays one of several views depending on the MMC view mode. Large Icons,
Small Icons, List or Details views are shown. The Details view shows the group name and a
description.

The Unassigned Instruments Zone

The unassigned instruments zone is a default zone that is delivered with the software. It cannot be
deleted. The instrument in this zone is considered the Site Default Instrument. This instrument can
be viewed as a security template for all instruments in the site. All newly registered instruments are
first assigned to this zone and inherit these default security settings.
Creating a New Zone (Grouping Instruments with Common Security
Properties)
1 In the administration client, navigate to the Security Zones node in the left-hand pane, right-
click, and select New Zone. The New Zone Wizard appears.
2 Enter the requested information, and click Finish. The new zone appears in the list of available
security zones.
You can now assign instruments and change the default settings for the default instrument in
that zone. Adding a new zone triggers the server to send an event notification to all currently
active clients.
Note
New zones automatically receive a default zone instrument that is a copy of the current site default
instrument. By changing the settings for the zone default instrument and then propagating those
settings to the zone members, the administrator can set up and maintain a consistent security
environment among several individual instruments at the same time.
