What are default instruments?

Default instruments are, in effect, security templates that administrators can use to help maintain a
consistent security environment either for the entire site or for different security zones within the
site.
For example, each zone contains a default instrument that represents the security settings applied
to all zone member instruments (you can override this default behavior.)
A special default instrument is the site default instrument in the 'Unassigned Instrument' zone.
This template is used each time a new instrument registers itself with Policy Manager, and
therefore should represent the basic security environment for the entire site.

What is the difference between an active and inactive instrument?

An active instrument is one that is ready for use, i.e. it is recording video and can receive
commands to perform searches and other functions from either a local or remote client.
An inactive instrument is one that is not responding to requests from the server. This does not
necessarily mean that the instrument is not currently recording video; there may be a network
issue that is preventing the communication between the server and the client. It is, however, a
situation that the administrator must investigate.
Instruments are polled on a regular basis to ensure that they are still active and available for use. If
an active instrument does not respond to this poll, or responds with an error code, the instrument
is considered to be inactive. At that time, a notification is sent to all currently active administration
sessions and an event is written out to the event logs.
