Checking the Salt Storage Level and Refilling

tanksupplied with salt.

Use clean water softening salts only, at least 99.5 % pure. N U(;GET, PEI +I +ET or comse SOI AR sahs are
recommended. Oo not use rock, hleeg granulated or ice cream maMng salts. They contain din and sedimems,
or nmsh and cake, and will create maimenance problems.

d_e water softening system handle iron in the water supply. Although dfis additive may help to
keep tl_e water softening system resin clean, it may also release corrosive fumes that weaken and
shorten dm lifi_of some water soflening system parts. GE recommends using only Diamond
Cusml: Red.Ou( brandsah.
Cleaning Iron Out of the Water Softening System
Your water softening system rakes hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) out of d_e water. Also, it tan
comrol some (see Specification Guidelines sec0on) "clear water" iron. With (;lear water iron, water fiom a fhncet
is (;lear when first pm imo a glass. After 15 to 30 minutes, the water begins to cloud or turn ms( colored.
A water softening system will notremove any iron that makes the water clou@ or ms U as it comes flom die
ihucet (called red water iron). To take red water iron om of water, or over dm maximum of clear water iron,
an iron filler or odmr equipmem is needed.
GE recommends using only Diamond Custal: Red,Ou( brand sails wid_ Iron Fighter: additive to help keep
d*e resin bed clean of clear iron. If your water supply has (lear water iron, periodi( resin bed cleaning is
needed. GE recommends using Super hon Out: brand resin bed (leaner to the>roughly dean your resin bed
if your iron content is high. (',lean tlle bed at least eve U six momhs, or more ellen if iron appears in d*e sofi
water bemeen cleanings.
IMPORTANT'. It is important to mix dm resin bed cleaner with water (following the mamlfhcmrer's instructions),
pour it imo the brine well (see page 6) and regenerate (lie sofiener immediately. Do not pour the resin bed
cleaner in widl the salt, as it _411not be as effective in cleaning (lie resin, and can cm_se damage to tl,e softener
if it is left in (lie brine tank fi)r an extended period due to tl_e corrosive gases float are limned.
