On the Road
In addition to the general safety and maintenance suggestions in this
preface, and Appendix B: Troubleshooting, keep these points in
mind:
Hand-carry the notebook.
For security, don't let it out of your sight. In some areas, computer
theft is very common.
Don't check it with "normal" luggage. Baggage handlers may not be
sufficiently careful. Avoid knocking the computer against hard ob-
jects.
Beware of Electromagnetic fields.
Metal detectors & X-ray machines
These devices can damage the computer, hard disk, floppy disks, LS-
120 disks and other media. They may also destroy any stored data -
Pass your computer and disks around the devices. Ask security offi-
cials to hand-inspect them. (You may be asked to turn it on.)
Note: Some airports also scan luggage with these devices.
