TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS

Engine Will Not Start

Possible Cause
Ignition switch OFF.
Choke lever not in CLOSED () position (cold engine).
Out of fuel.
Bad fuel, tiller stored without treating or draining gasoline,
refueled with bad gasoline.
Spark plug faulty, fouled, or has incorrect gap.
Fuel filter restricted, carburetor malfunction, ignition
malfunction, valves stuck, etc.
Low Power or Engine Speed Won't Increase
Possible Cause
Air filter dirty or restricted.
Fuel filter dirty or restricted.
Throttle cable out of adjustment, broken, or bent.
Tiller Tines (or Attachment) Won't Stop Turning When Throttle is at SLOW Position
Possible Cause
Faulty throttle control or cable; throttle cable out of
adjustment or bent.
Idle speed is too high.
Clutch springs worn or clutch system faulty.

Correction
Turn engine switch ON (page 13).
Move lever to CLOSED () position (page 13).
Add fuel and press priming bulb to fill carburetor (page 13).
Drain fuel tank. Refuel with fresh gasoline (page 25).
Gap or replace the spark plug (page 21).
Have an authorized Honda servicing dealer replace or repair
faulty components as needed.
Correction
Check, clean or replace the air filter (page 19, 20).
Check, clean or replace the fuel filter (page 25).
Adjust or replace the cable if necessary (page 23).
Correction
Check throttle control parts, adjust or replace cable if
necessary (page 23).
Have an authorized Honda servicing dealer adjust idle
speed.
Have an authorized Honda servicing dealer replace clutch
springs or replace or repair other clutch system parts.
