The following sections clarify key information regarding shared volumes.

Virtual LVI

Continuous Access Journal Z supports the Virtual LVI feature, which allows you to configure
custom-size LDEVs that are smaller than standard-size LDEVs. When custom-size LDEVs are
assigned to a Continuous Access Journal Z pair, the S-VOL must have the same capacity as
the P-VOL.
To perform Virtual LVI operations on a pair's P-VOL and S-VOL, the pair must be deleted and
the volumes' status returned to Simplex.

Cache Residency

You can perform Cache Residency operations on a Continuous Access Journal Z pair's P-VOL and
S-VOL.

Auto LUN

Except when Continuous Access Journal Z pair status is Pending or Duplex, you can specify the
Continuous Access Journal Z P-VOL or S-VOL as source volumes of Auto LUN.
Conversely, you cannot specify Continuous Access Journal Z pair volumes and journal volumes as
the target volumes of Auto LUN.

Performance Monitor

Performance Monitor software provides detailed information on I/O activity and hardware
performance in P9500 systems. Storage system usage and the performance data that is collected
and displayed by Performance Monitor enables you to:
Identify the optimum timing for performing Continuous Access Journal copy operations.
Determine the best locations for the Continuous Access Journal S-VOLs (for example; parity
groups with less frequently accessed volumes to avoid bottlenecks of back-end activity)
Monitor storage system performance during Continuous Access Journal operations and during
testing activities.
Use the following procedure to lessen the impact on Continuous Access Journal operations while
Performance Monitor is collecting data for one or more storage systems on the same P9500 internal
LAN:
1.
If Performance Monitor is collecting high amounts of LDEV data, disabling this activity, if
possible, for one or more storage systems.
2.
If Performance Monitor is collecting data for more than three storage systems on the P9500
internal LAN, disconnect Performance Monitor, if possible, from one or more storage systems
before using Continuous Access Journal.
3.
After you have disabled LDEV data collection and/or disconnected Performance Monitor
wherever possible, then connect to the storage system using Remote Web Console and launch
Continuous Access Journal.
4.
When Continuous Access Journal operations are completed, exit Continuous Access Journal
and Remote Web Console.
5.
Re-enable Performance Monitor data collection.
For further information on Performance Monitor, see HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance for
Open and Mainframe Systems User Guide.

Data Retention

You can create a Continuous Access Journal pair by using volumes to which access attribute is
assigned by Data Retention. However, you cannot specify a volume with "S-VOL Disable" attribute
as the secondary data volume of the pair. The following table shows pair status and availability
of Data Retention operation.
