Before you start

Deciding which HBA and cabling configuration to use with external drives is a complex choice and
supported configurations are constantly being updated. Always refer to
for the latest information about cables and supported HBAs.
Select tape backup and navigate down to the Hardware Compatibility table for your make of server.
The server/tape drive matrix shows top-level compatibility, but be sure to click on the box for your
combination of server and tape drive to display a further page with detailed connectivity information.
Non-HP servers may have an active external port. To connect to it you must purchase an additional cable.
If the server does not have an active external port, you must purchase and install an additional HBA that
supports external connection and an additional cable.
NOTE:
If you use a recommended cable (not supplied) to attach directly to the external SAS port and the tape
drive does not function, one possible cause is that the port is inactive or not supported for external tape
devices. Please refer to
information on supported configurations.

Connecting the tape drive to an external SAS port

The following instructions are valid ONLY for non-HP or HP ProLiant servers with an HBA that supports
external SAS ports.
This installation does not modify your existing SAS configuration and does not require you to remove
the server cover; you connect the tape drive directly to the external port. It requires you to purchase an
additional SAS cable. If you are installing a new HBA, it requires a spare PCI slot for the new HBA.
