Distributing a Group
Software Manager Reference
.MSP, .MST, .WSE, and .IPF. Those formats have default command lines, and Group
Distribution determines the installation file. However, by defining packages for any of
those formats, you can add additional files to the installation or change the default
command line.
Packages That Are Not Distributed
Merge modules and SOE snapshots are ignored during Group Distribution, even though
you can add them to groups. Merge modules can't be used at installation or deployment
time; they are added to a Windows Installer package when the package is created. SOE
snapshots should not be distributed.

How Package Relationships Affect Group Distribution
Before you distribute a group:
Verify that all packages in the group have package definitions, except for the
following formats: .MSI, .WSI, .MSP, .MST, .WSE, and .IPF.
See
Creating a Package Definition
If a package requires a restart during installation, display its Package Attributes
dialog box and mark the Package could require a reboot check box. When Group
Distribution creates the deployment wrapper .EXE, it inserts Pause statements
immediately following the Execute Program action that runs the package.
Set the group deployment properties.
See
Setting Group Deployment Properties
If the group contains .WSI or .WSE packages, they are compiled before the deployment
wrapper is created.
Merge modules and SOE snapshots cannot be distributed through Group Distribution.
Merge modules can't be used at installation or deployment time; they are added to a
Windows Installer package when the package is created. SOE snapshots should not be
distributed. Therefore, merge modules and SOE snapshots do not appear on the Select
Packages dialog box.
To distribute a group
1.
(Enterprise Management Server only.) If multiple databases are open, select a
database in the Applications/Packages pane.
2.
Select Setup menu > Groups > Distribute.
The Select Group dialog box appears.
3.
Select a group and click Next.
If you select a group containing a package that has a supersedence relationship, a
message asks you to edit the group. Click Yes and complete the Superseding
Packages dialog box. This updates the group, not just this distribution instance.
