About SVS Enabled Packages

Creating an SVS Enabled Package

Software Manager Reference
In Software Manager, you can enable packages for the Software Virtualization Solution
(SVS). You can enable .MSI and .WSI packages or any type of package that has an
associated package definition file.
For more information about Software Virtualization Solution (SVS), search for
Workspace Virtualization on the symantec.com Web site.
See
About Package Definition
When an enabled package is installed on a target computer where the Software
Virtualization Agent is present, the enabled package can create a virtual software layer,
install the package into the layer, and save and activate the layer. If the Software
Virtualization Agent is not present, the package is installed normally.
Warning
Before an enabled package creates a new layer on a computer, it must deactivate any
active layers. It reactivates those layers after creating the new layer. Caution should be
taken to not deactivate layers that are currently being used.
When you enable a package for SVS, a WiseScript (.WSE) wrapper is created that
contains the package and the instructions for its installation. You can edit this wrapper
with WiseScript Package Editor or WiseScript Editor to customize the installation. This
editing might include adding SVS script actions that manage and update the layer. The
.WSE file is compiled into an .EXE. You run this .EXE to install the package.
An SVS enabled package retains any configuration logic of the installation. (Example: If
the original installation contains a prerequisite that checks for a specific version of the
.NET Framework runtime and installs it if needed, this is retained in the enabled
package.) On the other hand, when you use SetupCapture to create a virtual software
package any configuration logic of the installation is lost.
If the package has a status of Available, the wrapper uses the package in the Available
Packages directory; otherwise, the wrapper uses the package in the scripts directory
unless it has been put in another location.
When you create an SVS enabled Windows Installer (.MSI or .WSI) package, you can set
Windows Installer command lines to define how the package is installed. You can use
these command lines to apply one or more transforms to the package. Any transforms
are then included in the WiseScript wrapper.
You create SVS enabled packages to take advantage of the Software Virtualization
Solution (SVS). When an SVS enabled package is installed on a target computer where
the Software Virtualization Agent is present, it is installed into a virtual software layer.
Note
You do not need the Software Virtualization Solution (SVS) installed on your computer to
enable packages for SVS.
To create an SVS enabled package
1.
In the Applications/Packages pane, click a package.
2.
Select Packages menu > SVS Enabled Package.
