there simply aren't enough free channels to perform the operation, in which case you get another
error message.
The easiest way to understand Keep Checking is to look at it from the standpoint of what you want
to do. If it's absolutely essential that Power Assign use exactly the range of channels you have in
mind (i.e. the Axcess code is already written and it would be a fair amount of work to change it),
turn off Keep Checking, and turn on Start At. If the requested channels are not available (i.e.
they've been used elsewhere), you get an error message, telling you that Power Assign couldn't
assign the channels. This means that the channels in question have been used elsewhere. You can
then use the channel map to verify which of the channels in the range you wanted were in use.
If it isn't important that the channels end up exactly where you had specified, just that they are
assigned as a group, you can select Keep Checking and Power Assign will do just that, subject to
the Begin Assignment At, Ensure Contiguous Code Assignment, and Split Across Port IDs settings.
One nice thing about the Power Assign palette is that it retains its settings after use, which is handy
when you need both the push channels and variable text channels to have the same numeric values.
First, use the Functions tab of the Workspace Navigator and click back and forth between the push
channel and address options. Look for a clear range of channels large enough and make a note of
the start channel. Next, open the Power Assign dialog.
Here's the setup you would use:
1. Check Begin Assignment At and Ensure Contiguous Code Assignment. Split Across Port
IDs is optional based on whether these channels will be used for System Calls or need to have
mutually exclusive feedback.
2. Then supply the device and channel values, click Channel under Function Code Type, and
click Assign.
3. Next, click Address under Function Code Type, and click Assign again. If you didn't require
both the push channel and address to match, you're done. If they need to match, watch for an
error in either of the assignment operations. If this is the case, clear both the push channels and
variable text channels using the Clear Codes action settings.
While initially somewhat confusing, an immense amount of power is available in the options under
Function Code Action. Since the selection is retained after any operation, if you make a mistake, it's
easy to click Clear Codes and hit the assign button again. Remember that Power Assign processes
the channel assignments based on the order in the selection so, if the order is important to you,
make sure to create the selection using the Shift-Select technique.
