Instruction Manual 1221EX Distillation Sample Probe 4.0 Theory of Operation All ethylene production facilities will employ some type of cracking furnace, which is used to convert saturated hydrocarbons found in the feed stock into unsaturated hydrocarbons or olefins, which are the basic building blocks used in a variety of chemicals produced downstream of the olefins plant.
  • Page 6 Instruction Manual 1221EX Distillation Sample Probe The Model 1221EX Distillation Probe utilizes a counter current flow technique for cooling of the sample. Cooling medium flows in opposite direction of the process gas on the outside of the distillation column. Heat is conducted through the column wall and then transferred to the cooling medium.
  • Page 7 Instruction Manual 1221EX Distillation Sample Probe Various Separator Discs When the sample gas enters the first stage of the probe, the gas and separator will be at its highest operating temperature. This is due to the counter current flow design of the sample (upwards) vs. the flow of the cooling medium (downwards).

  • Page 14: Probe Controller

Instruction Manual 1221EX Distillation Sample Probe 9.0 Probe Controller The Model 1221EX Distillation Probe’s primary function is to cool the sample gas to a specified temperature. The sample setpoint determines the average temperature of the sample gas and is programmed in degrees Celsius. Basic operation is to enable cooling when the gas temperature is above the desired setpoint and disable cooling when it drops below the setpoint.

  • Page 20: Sample Isolation Valve Manual Operation Screen

Instruction Manual 1221EX Distillation Sample Probe 9.6 Sample Isolation Valve Manual Operation Screen The sample isolation valve (AV1) is a normally closed pneumatic valve which requires instrument air from the ball valve (BV1) to open and allow sample to flow. Controllers with automatic sample shutoff also require an energized sample shutoff solenoid (SV2) to allow instrument air to reach the sample isolation valve.
  • Page 21: Sample Temperature Setpoints Screen

Instruction Manual 1221EX Distillation Sample Probe 9.7 Sample Temperature Setpoints Screen The Model 1221EX Distillation Probe’s primary task is to cool sample gas to a desired temperature. This is accomplished by turning on and off RELAY OUTPUT 1 which enables and disables vortex cooling of the distillation column. This on/off control is configured by selecting a sample temperature ALARM SET point at which RELAY OUTPUT 1 will turn on, and an ALARM RESET point that it will turn off.
  • Page 22: Sample Isolation Setpoints

Instruction Manual 1221EX Distillation Sample Probe A lag always exists between cooling cycle operation and sample temperature response. This can vary based on process gas temperatures, ambient humidity and temperatures, and process gas flow rates. This is also due to the material mass of the probe, properties of the process gases, and inlet temperature of the coolant medium.

Instruction Manual 1221EX Distillation Sample Probe 12.0 Troubleshooting • Ensure that vortex cooled probes are supplied with 40 SCFM (68 Sm /h) air at 80-100 psig (550-690 kPa). Measurements to ensure this should be made at the probe, not at the supply header. Consider loss in pressure due to supply lines which may be inadequately sized diametrically and/or too long.
