Overview

This document shows you how to configure and connect supported Leica GS18 receivers with Emesent's Backpack or Vehicle RTK units and then monitor and process the RTK data.
Product Appearance

information The term "Leica receiver", used throughout this guide, refers specifically to the Leica devices supported by Emesent's Vehicle RTK and Backpack RTK solutions. Currently, these include the Leica GS18, GS18T, and GS18I receivers.

Requirements

Hardware
The following hardware is required to set up the Leica receiver:

Hardware Details
Computer or Leica CS
  • PC or Laptop able to run Leica Captivate 8.00 CS simulator
  • Leica CS field controller
Emesent RTK unit
  • Backpack RTK
  • Vehicle RTK
Emesent accessories
  • GNSS adaptor
  • Mounting plate
Cable
  • Emesent Leica GNSS cable

Configuring the Device

Using Leica Captivate Simulator

If you don't have a Leica CS20 field controller or similar to be able to configure the receiver, or prefer to use a computer, then follow these steps:

  1. Download and install Leica Captivate simulator from Leica website.
  2. Connect to the Leica GS18 open WiFi connection.
  3. Launch Leica Captivate simulator and it should automatically connect to the receiver.

Configuring the NMEA Settings

Once connected, configure the NMEA settings to make sure the Leica receiver can communicate properly with the Hovermap.

  1. Go to (1) Settings → (1) Connections → (5) All other connections → NMEA 1.
Configuring the NMEA Settings - Step 1
Configuring the NMEA Settings - Step 2
  2. Open the NMEA settings panel and turn on "Stream NEMA".
  3. Set the Connect using to: GS Port 1.
  4. Set the NMEA Version to: 4.0 (extended).
  5. Use a defined talker ID can be left unchecked (turned off).
Configuring the NMEA Settings - Step 3
  6. Select Messages and make sure the following are configured:
Configuring the NMEA Settings - Step 4
Configuring the NMEA Settings - Step 5

Output Rate 0.20, Immediate

  • GGA, GSA, GST, ZDA

Output Rate 1.00, Immediate

  • SVG

Configuring the Tilt and Antenna Height

  1. Navigate to:Settings → GS Sensor.
Configuring the Tilt and Antenna Height - Step 1
  2. Make sure that Tilt Compensation is left unchecked (turned off).
Configuring the Tilt and Antenna Height - Step 2
  3. Make sure that Rover antenna is set to ADVNULLANTENNA and Antenna height is set to 0.00m.
Configuring the Tilt and Antenna Height - Step 3

Connecting to Hovermap

  1. Attach the Hovermap and Leica receiver to the Vehicle RTK or Backpack RTK unit. Refer to the Vehicle RTK User Manual ("Setup the Vehicle RTK Mount") or the Backpack RTK User Manual ("Setup the Backpack RTK Mount") for instructions.
Connecting to Hovermap - Step 1

caution When using the Leica GS18 with the Backpack unit, please use both 100mm spacers (200mm total offset) to ensure the correct offset in Aura.

  1. Once attached, plug the GNSS adaptor cable into the RTK mount and fasten the adaptor to the magnetic plate.
Connecting to Hovermap - Step 2
  2. Plug the Leica cable into the receiver and the other end (black Lemo connector) into the GNSS adaptor port. The Leica receiver should now be setup to work with your Vehicle RTK or Backpack RTK unit.
Connecting to Hovermap - Step 3

Monitoring RTK Status

The Emesent Commander application provides clear visibility of the RTK status before and during the mission. This enables you to monitor RTK quality without leaving Commander to reference Leica's field controller.
Monitoring RTK Status

information If the settings are configured correctly and the Leica receiver is properly connected, Emesent Commander will display the Position and Precision without errors. Any communication errors are displayed in the app as warning notifications.

caution Hovermap cannot detect an incorrectly set antenna height, so ensure it is properly configured.

Processing RTK Data

Once data has been captured, you can process it using Emesent Aura. Ensure that your license includes the ability to process RTK datasets (SLAM and RTK). If you need to upgrade your license, contact licensing@emesent.io

information You must have Emesent Aura version 1.9 or later installed to process Leica RTK data.

  1. Open Emesent Aura and in the Process tab, click Process Scan.
  2. In the Configure New Scan Job panel, select the Process workflow.
  3. Click Add Dataset then browse for and select the folder containing the raw RTK data to be processed.
  4. You will be prompted once RTK data is detected in your dataset. Toggle on the RTK data.
Processing RTK Data - Step 1
  5. In the Location field, enter the preferred name for the output folder. A subfolder is then created, which stores all the processed data and results.
  6. Click Processing Settings and in the General tab under Georeferencing, select the RTK device and GNSS receiver used to capture the RTK data.
Processing RTK Data - Step 2

caution For optimal results, ensure that the Georeferencing mode and GNSS receiver type match the hardware used during data collection. Otherwise, the resulting point cloud will remain usable, although its accuracy may be affected.

  1. Under Base coordinate reference system (CRS), set the Coordinate reference system in which the data was originally collected. If you are reprojecting the point cloud, this information is essential for accurate transformations and reprojections to the target CRS.
Processing RTK Data - Step 3
  2. Click Save to apply the settings and return to the main screen. Then, click Start to process the scan.

Troubleshooting

Issue Potential cause(s) Potential solutions

RTK fix is not maintained while driving

The RTK receiver is set to a profile that's assuming it's being handheld If using the "GS18 pillar" or "GS18 pole" antenna setting, try changing the setting to ADVNULLANTENNA

Hovermap is not showing RTK status

Hovermap has not detected that it's connected to a Leica receiver, as the Leica does not output data until it has GPS lock Restart Hovermap while the Leica receiver has GPS lock
