3.6- GROUNDING THE
GENERATOR
(Figure 3-9)
The National Electric Code (NEC) requires
that the generator frame and external elect-
rically conductive parts be
properly
connected to an earth ground. State or local
codes may also require proper grounding of
the unit. For that purpose, a GROUNDING LUG
is provided on the generator.
State and local codes. may vary. Consult a
local electrician for grounding requirements
in your area. DO NOT CONNECT THE GROUND WIRE
TO ANY PIPE THAT CARRIES A FLAMMABLE OR
EXPLOSIVE SUBSTANCE- FIRE OR AN EXPLOSION MAY
RESULT.
Proper grounding will help protect people
against electrical shock in the event of a
ground fault condition in the generator or
in
connected electrical devices. In addition,
grounding will
help dissipate static
electricity
that
often
builds
up
in
ungrounded equipment.

GENERATOR
A-C NEUTRAL
CONNECTIONS
GENERAC PTO generators utilize an UNGROUNDED
NEUTRAL. Grounding is recommended only at the
main service entrance. If the neutral wire is
grouned and one of the phase loads become
grounded, the excessive current will open the
main circuit breaker or collapse the genera-
tor field. The actual result will depend
or
the electrical characteristics of the speci-
fic installed generator.
