OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
4.1- BEFORE
USING
THE
GENERATOR
Prior to generator use, complete the follow-
ing tasks:-
a. Make sure the tractor can supply the
required horsepower to the generator's power
takeoff (PTO) shaft. Approximately 73 horse-
power is needed to operate the unit at its
full rated capacity.
b. Use only a 540 rpm tractor power takeoff
(PTO) drive speed. Any attempt to operate the
generator at higher input drive speeds will
result in serious damage to the unit.
c. Read all SAFETY RULES at the front of this
Manual carefully. Also read instructions and
information on decals and labels affixed to
the
generator.
d. The generator must be securely mounted
(see Paragraph 3.3 on Page 7).
DANGER!
Extremely high torsional (twisting) forces
will be present during generator operation
when
electrical
loads are
connected
and
turned ON. Tipping of the generator may occur
4
if it is not securely mounted.
4.2-
CONNECTING
THE POWER
TAKEOFF
SHAFT
(Figure 4-1)
The generator gearbox features a standard 1-
3/8 inch diameter, 6-spline drive shaft. A
suitable power takeoff (PTO) shaft must be
supplied that will fit the gearbox shaft and
the tractor PTO drive shaft.
NOTE
A high quality, telescoping power takeoff
shaft is available from GENERAC. Ask your
Dealer/Distributor for details or consult the
factory.
Connect the PTO shaft to the tractor power
takeoff drive shaft and
to
the generator
gearbox shaft. Generator and tractor shafts
must be parallel as viewed from the top and
sides of the shaft. Maintain PTO shaft joint
angles equal and as small as possible. See
Figure 4-1.

4.3- CHECK GEARBOX OIL
LEVEL
Always check gearbox oil level before using
your generator. See Paragraph 3.1 on Page 7.
4.4- STARTING THE GENERATOR (Figure 4-2)
a. Set the generator's MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER
to its OFF or OPEN position.
CAUTION!
NEVER start or stop the generator with elec-
trical loads connected and turned ON. Elec-
trical loads must be connected and turned ON
only AFTER the panel voltmeter indicates 120
volts. A voltmeter reading of 120 volts
indicates that a-c frequency and generator
operating speed are correct. Some electrical
devices may be damaged by incorrect voltage
and/or frequency. In addition, starting the
unit with electrical loads applied imposes a
heavy load on the PTO drive system at lower
speeds where adequate horsepower may not be
available.
b. Check that the power takeoff (PTO) shaft
is properly connected to both the generator
and the tractor PTO shaft. See Paragraph 4.2.
c. Start the tractor engine.
d. SLOWLY increase tractor engine speed until
the generator voltmeter needle indicates app-
roximately 120 volts (see Figure 4-2).
DANGER!
NEVER connect
or
disconnect
the
modular
connector, 240 volts 50 amp connector plug,
or any 120 volts 15 amp plug while electrical
loads are connected and running. Unplugging
any connector plug while electrical loads are
applied
may
result
in
severe
electrical
arcing and resultant personal
injury or
damage to equipment.
