MODEL 201E AMMONIA ANALYZER Training Manual The Photo Multiplier Tube The M201E uses a photo-multiplier tube (PMT) to detect the amount of light created by the NO and O reaction in the reaction cell. A PMT is typically a vacuum tube containing a variety of specially designed electrodes. Photons enter the PMT and strike a negatively charged photo cathode causing it to emit electrons.

The higher the voltage, the greater is the number of electrons emitted from each dynode of the electron multiplier, making the PMT more sensitive and responsive to small variations in light intensity but also increases random noise (dark noise).
