ASE-A Damped Acceleration Transducer INSTRUCTION MANUAL
Thank you for purchasing the KYOWA product. Before using it, read this
instruction manual carefully. Also, keep the manual within easy reach so that
you can refer to whenever necessary.
Specifications and dimensions described in this manual could be changed
without notice. Please visit our website for the latest version.
1. Calling the operator's attention
The following cautionary symbols and headlines are used to invite the operator's
attention. Be sure to observe the accompanying precautions in order to
safeguard the operator and preserve the performance of the instrument.
Improper handling can cause serious injury to the

operator.
Cautions are given to invite the operator's attention, in
Caution
order to avoid instrument failure or mal-function.
2. Important notice
Unless specified, the transducer must not be used under hydrogen environment.
3. Safety precautions
Be sure to mount the product properly.
If the product loosens while using it, the product may be detached or
damaged, and operators may be damaged.
4. Installation
4.1 Sensitive axis
When installing the transducer, Fig.1 below, install it to provide a proper
sensing direction.

4.2 How to install
(1) Clean the mounting area thoroughly.
(2) Also clean the mounting surface of the transducer.
(3) Apply a thin coating of silicon grease between the transducer and
measuring object.
(4) To install, use M1.6 8mm long screws in diagonal position. Drill holes in
the measuring object. The holes' effective screw depth should be longer
than 4.
The tightening torque is 1N ・ m (1kgf ・ cm).

Caution
Do not disassemble the transducer.
Due to mounting holes, corners of the transducer case is thin-walled
structure. Avoid dropping or hitting against a hard matter. Or the case will be
deformed or damaged.
This transducer is extra sensitive to impact. Avoid, therefore, dropping it or
hitting against a hard matter. Avoid impact in excess of its allowable overload
rating. If not, the transducer may be damaged.
Note that the frequency characteristic of the transducer may vary according
to the condition of installation achieved.
It is ideal that when installed, the transducer is in complete, close contact with
the measuring object. When installing, carefully avoid external force such as
bending or twisting on the transducer.
If the transducer is installed using an adhesive, excessive force applied to
remove it may deform the transducer's cabinet. Also at the moment when the
cabinet comes off the measuring object, impact may occur to cause the
internal sensor to resonate, thus further causing failure of the transducer. If
the transducer is to be used repeatedly, be therefore sure to install it using
screws.
Be sure to fix the cable to the measurement object as much close as possible
to the transducer mainframe. If circumstances do not allow to fix the cable to
the measurement object, let the cable to slack in such a manner that it will
not be pulled after mounting.
Make sure that the bending radius of cable is longer than 10 times of a
diameter of the cable.
The transducer is not waterproof. Take care to avoid water and highly humid
(over 85%) environment.
4.3 Operating suggestions
(1) It is recommended to use the ASE-A with 10 V excitation voltage. Some
models of KYOWA Compact Crash Test Logger (hereinafter referred to
as the DIS series) can be used by connecting the ASE-A and selecting
10 V excitation voltage.
When measuring acceleration with the ASE-A connected to the above
DIS series, using the DIS series with 10 V excitation voltage is an effective
measures against external noise. However, when using the ASE-A with
10 V excitation voltage, pay attention to the following instructions.
・ Do not use the ASE-A connected channel as a level trigger channel.
・ After turning on the DIS series, wait 3 minutes or more before starting the
measurement.
(2) When conducting the Pedestrian Head Protection Performance test,
ground the aluminum skull (meta1) portion of the head impactor and the
DIS series. The grounding is an effective measures against noise
caused by electric charge generated between the head skin material
and aluminum skull of the head impactor resulting to adversely affect the
ASE-A output at the time of impact (referring to Fig.3).

In the grounding work, confirm whether there is electrical conductivity
between the connection point of metal surface (with no anodizing
treatment or other isolation coating) of the head impactor and ground wire.
