IV. Troubleshooting Check list - Commercial Burnishers
The following is a guide to aid in determining the origin of a problem for which these models could conceivably be
brought in for service.
Problem
Possible Cause
1. Circuit breaker
1. Wrong pad.
trips on the
machine
2. Excessive load caused by floor
3. Machine being operated
4. Buffing with a loaded pad
5. Pad adjustment too
NOTE: It is important to rule out the above causes before proceeding to evaluate
6. Motor failed; bad armature or
7. Belt too tight.
8. Pad driver bearings failed.
9. Weak breaker.
10. Warped pad driver.
2. Building circuit
1. Building circuit overloaded - other
breaker trips.
2. Building circuit breaker rating
3. Low building voltage.
3. Noise
1. Belt slipping (squealing).
2. Belt too tight (clicking)
3. Bad bearings - motor pad
4. Motor pulley set screw loose.
4. Motor speed
1. Bad armature (C5039/41).
varies constantly,
2. Bad motor brushes (C5039/41).
even with machine
3. Fluctuating line voltage.
off floor.
4. Bad run capacitor.
5. Machine won't
1. Machine not plugged in.
start.
2. No voltage at outlet.
3. Building or machine circuit breaker 3. Check and reset.
4. Low line voltage.
5. Loose wiring connection.
6. On/Off switch failed.

tripped.
Possible Solution
1. Proper pad is critical to machine operation.
Check pad manufacturer's literature to
insure pad is correct.
2. Check to insure the floor is properly prepared
and that the floor finish is specified for high
speed burnishing.
3. Follow operating instructions in owner manual.
If avoidable, machine should not be operated
in a backward stroke.
4. Clean pad and check operation.
5. Readjust knob and check operation. Turn
knob counterclockwise to raise machine and
relieve pressure.
6. Check motor and replace. Check amp draw with
belt disconnected. Readings should be approx.
4 amps for C5039 and C5041, and 8 amps for
C5037.
7. Adjust belt and check.
8. Replace bearings. Unit must be realigned once
these bearings are disassembled. (Ref. section N)
9. Check and replace (check alignment first).
10. Replace driver (wood drivers on C5037, C5039).
1. If possible, unplug other equipment or find a
clear circuit.
2. Advise building maintenance personnel.
3. Check voltage. Should not be below 118 volts AC.
1. Tighten belt - procedure outlined in owner or
service manual.
2. Readjust to proper tension.
3. Replace bearings - unit must be realigned once
these bearings are disassembled (Ref. section N).
4. Tighten.
1. Check and replace motor.
2. Check and replace.
3. Check.
4. Test - follow guidelines in section R.
1. Plug in machine.
2. Check fuse or breaker.
4. Check - should not be below 118 volts AC.
5. Check for obvious loose connection.
6. Replace switch.
