48 Appendix A: Glossary
• GOP
Group of Pictures. A group of pictures is a group of successive pictures within an
MPEG-coded video stream. The GOP consists of a reference picture (I-frame)
followed by up to a specified number of P-frames, which reference the I-frame.
The following I-frame marks the start of the next GOP.
• Grab
To acquire or capture an image from a camera.
• H.264
A video compression standard that provides block-oriented and
motion-estimation-based codecs. It is also known as MPEG4 part 10 or AVC (for
Advanced Video Coding).
• Horizontal synchronization signal
The part of a video signal that indicates the end of a line and the start of a new one.
• Host
In general, Host refers to the principal CPU in one's computer.
• Interlaced scanning
Describes a transfer of data in which the odd-numbered lines of the source are
written to the destination buffer first and then the even-numbered lines (or
vice-versa).

• MPEG
Moving Picture Experts Group. A universal standard established for the compression
of digital video and audio data.
