Overview
This chapter describes the most common components included with your chassis.
Some components listed may not be included or compatible with your particular
chassis model. For more information, see the installation instructions detailed later
in this manual or visit the Supermicro web site at www.supermicro.com.

Component Descriptions
The SC217HD models house two separate computing nodes, each containing its
own motherboard. The SC217HQ models house four computing nodes.
Drives
The SC217 chassis includes twenty-four hot-swappable hard drives which can be
removed from the hard drive bays in the chassis without powering down the server.
For the HD models, each node supports twelve drives, and for the HQ models, each
node supports six drives.
Backplane
Each SC217 chassis comes equipped with a BPN-SAS-217HQ or BPN-SAS-217HD
backplane. For more information regarding compatible backplanes, see the appen-
dices at the end of this manual.
Fans
The SC217 chassis accepts four system fans powered from the motherboards
through the backplane. On SC217HQ models, the two fans on each side are con-
trolled by the two motherboards on that side, so that when one of the motherboard
nodes is removed, the second motherboard will continue to control both fans.
On SC217HD models, the two fans on each side are controlled by the motherboard
on that side, so when it is removed, the two fans stop.
